How Many Centimeters Dilated Before You're Admitted?

I searched but didn't see this question or topic. Just went walking...and although it's good for my health, I don't think it did a thing to jumpstart labor! I've been walking for the last couple of days. I'll have MINOR cramping and then nothing. At this point, I'm not trying to go into immediate labor, but I'm hoping this walking will at least help me dilate. I have an appointment Monday. I'm hoping and praying I'll be at least 4cm by then. I was at 1 this past Tuesday. I wonder how many cm I'd have to be in order to be admitted?

Re: How Many Centimeters Dilated Before You're Admitted?

  • At my hospital, 4cm dilated with contractions 5 min apart lasting for 1 min for at least 1 hour

  • I think it's more of a combination of cm and contractions. I've was sitting at 3cm and contractions 7 minutes apart consistently for about a day and was not admitted. The contractions quit and then of course nothing else has happened since then for me.

  • My Kaiser said water breaking/broke or contractions 5 min apart. I dismiss it because with my son I never dilated past 1cm on my own and that was AFTER my water broke at home. @mommy1922, I doubt they'd send u home at 5cm.
  • Ok thanks ladies. I know she'll come when she's ready (as my mom keeps saying lol) but I'm just kinda ready. Least I think I am! :D But I'm taking our bags this Monday just in case! ;)
  • 4 centimeters for mine :) so close yet so far!!!!
  • At the facility I work in, we base it in on whether there's been an actual change/increase in your dilation. IE if you come in and are 3cm, we'll keep you for a few hours and let you walk around, sit on the birthing ball, etc and then recheck. If you've progressed/thinned, well typically keep you. If your cervix stays the same, home you go. Some STMs can be 4-5cm for a long period of time, and unless they change from there, still home they go most times. There's no "certain" dilation or pattern of contractions necessarily required to be admitted (though it plays a part of course, regular contractions are what change the cervix).
  • Thanks for the info! Guess I will see my progress on Monday.
