seriously itchy!

I have a rash I my arms and legs that is literally driving me insane. It's keeping me awake at night scratching. I've been treated for scabies but I don't think it's that.. I think it might be Prurigo of pregnancy but can't be sure. Anyone have any ideas?! Or had this?! Going out of my mind!!

I've had this on my arms and neck - but I normally have eczema and get these breakouts anyway. Definitely has gotten worse with being pregnant too! My dr. approved Benadryl and Benadryl anti-itch and even let's me use my mild topical steroid if it gets really bad. I try to avoid it all and find that ice packs work really well. Good luck!

  • I had the same thing. It turned out to actually be contagious mites from a puppy i just bought that had sarcoptic mange. Scabies has similar symptoms though and is caused by a different kind of mite not from animals. It starts out with a few itchy bumps and spreads throughout the body the more you scratch. The bumps are raised and will stay small. It itches like 10 times worse at night. Definately make an appointment to get checked out asap because if it is scabies, it will get worse. I was prescribed a treatment of permethrim and had to wash everything in my house everyday for a few weeks plus treatments for my dogs. The itching has finally gone away after almost 3 weeks after the treatment. Antihistamines are safe to take during pregnancy and it will help you to sleep at night.
  • I get stress hives that look like that. All. Over. I would get it checked out and get some form of relief. If you can grab Benedryl, that helps a little. I used Sarna lotion. When I was pregnant with my DD, at 6 months I developed some type of dermatitis in my stretch marks, not PUPPS. I couldn't be treated until I had the baby. Nothing, and I mean nothing helped. Benedryl only knocked me out so I could sleep through it. I hope you find some relief. Ice packs do relieve the instant itch.

  • I had PUPPPS post pregnancy (super rare) last time. It is HELL!!! I would have rather given birth again than have that rash. My doctor thought it was an allergic reaction so she prescribed me antihistamines which did not work. The only thing that helped was a few showers a day with pine tar soap. I had it on my arms and legs too and they were bright red!! It was awful!! I hope it's not that!
  • Those look like hives. I currently have them, too. I've had them for about 6 weeks. I use Triple Paste diaper cream on them. It helps to take away the itch and it's perfectly safe. Give it a try!
  • Thanks everyone. I'm currently covered in the scabies treatment so we will see if that works. If not I wouldn't rule out stress hives as this pregnancy was a complete surprise and seriously bad timing so I've been under huge stress, especially as the moment I tell my work in pregnant I have to stop work and I won't get paid until I go back so it could be up to a year with no salary!!! Think I might look into those stress hives....!!

I completely agree it looks like hives to me. It really doesn't look like scabies to me. I would talk to your doc again but I think you might be right about it being prurigo of pregnancy. PUPPP usually develops on the abdomen and develops later in pregnancy. But either way the treatment is the same low dose topical steroid, basically hydrocortisone cream that you apply to the itchy areas. You could also try levocetirizine which is an antihistamine that's pregnancy class B to help you sleep at night. We don't have it in Canada but I think it's called Xyzal in the US. But again, I would check with your doctor, these are just some ideas you might want to bring up :)
