Baby's room dilemma

The husband and I are stuck! He wants the room to be big time theme-y with stuff on the walls and the bedding and all that stuff. I want subtle decorations with just simple wall hangings and accent touches. I'm more of a toned down, natural stuff and he's more bright and in your face type. Any suggestions on a compromise or can I just do it and let it be a surprise?

  • The suggestion of having a few thing pop is probably going to be the best bet for you and hubby. You each pick the things you like most and see how you can make them work together. If you like more subtle colors have that the main color and do accents in the bright color he likes. Mix and match bedding if you can.

Maybe suggest to him that you guys start off the room subdued and slowly add things over time?
  • For our little girl we are doing a Star Wars theme. Now, most of the stuff will just be pink, grey, and gold. Then the pictures on the wall will be Star Wars, plus a death star globe for the book shelf, and possibly an AT-AT rocker. So while we have a theme, we are doing plain sheets/bedding and not plastering Star Wars everywhere. I think any theme can quickly go overboard, but the best compromise may be letting him pick themed wall art while you get your simple decorations for everything else.
  • I think you could certainly make the base of the room very neutral. Throw him a bone and put a couple of the things he wants in the room, but just not EVERYTHING. I think it's easy to get carried away when you start with a set from a store. I steer clear of sets and just stick with a color scheme. My daughter's room is just going to be mint and lavender with lots of white/ivory accents. I figure if I make it a little more grown up, she can grow into it. I did the same with my first daughter, she's almost 3 and I've only had to get her new bedding and remove the changing pad. Her room is pretty much the same as it was when it was her nursery and it will probably be relatively similar until she's 8-10yo.

  • I love nursery designs so I decided to find two pictures for you. You can still use bright colors for him but maybe shy away from themes. Or if he really wants animals or something there are some really cute prints out there that aren't so kidish. I'm considering ordering some from this site: https://www.theanimalprintshop.com/Nursery-Art/

For some reason orange came to mind for him since he likes bright colors, here are two pictures I would use as inspiration depending on if you want a more feminine palette or more neutral.

We are doing the same thing but with Dumbo. I'm OBSESSED (to put it lightly) with Disney and I could very easily go very very overboard fast.

I decided on neutral grey with turquoise and yellow accessories and then splashes of Dumbo. There's a stuffed on on the dresser, some wall decor, feather hooks and a few other small things... Nothing crazy!
  • My husband and I are in the same dilemma. However, I'm a interior designer so I think I'm allowed to have most of the say :) I think he will be happy once it's completed. If I gave him control, we would have a Red Sox nursery! Not that a Red Sox theme is horrible (okay, I'm lying- in my opinion it is horrible..lol) but I just have a way different vision.

I used to babysit for a couple who were big-time Phillies fans. Their son's nursery was a baseball/sports theme, but it was so elegantly done. I'd do a Red Sox theme like that - using the team colors with a couple themed accents.

  • I'm so glad my husband let's me decorate however I want! I just get to show him when it's done. Every time I buy something cute I show him so he can see what it looks like. I did ask him his input on the colors for the baby room at least. He knows how much I love to decorate.
  • Just tell him big themes won't be good idea bc then he will have to repaint/decorate again for next one! I just kinda of took over doing it (like the whole house) but let him help pick the paint color. Since we were doing grey he got to pick the OSU grey from Home Depot for his alma mater, so he was thrilled. If it's a girl we will accent with pink and if boy I prefer turquoise, however if hubby is adamant about wanting red for his team colors I may give in. Just cause it would be his little boy ;-p

  • I would honestly do a subtle theme with pops of color. It's the easiest way to compromise. My DH is a big fan of bright, bold colors, I'm more like you, I like calm and natural.

My husband and I had a similar dilemma. He wanted to do a space theme and I wanted to do a safari or farm animal theme. We agreed that if it was a girl it was animals, if it was a boy it was space. Well he was a bit disappointed that it was a girl, but only because he didn't get to do his theme. So we compromised. We agreed to do gender neutral and I told him to pick an animal. He chose elephants and I chose giraffes. Our colors are yellow and grey with pink, white, and teal accents. We also agreed that if we have another we would keep this room as the nursery because it's gender neutral. We would just move the pink stuff to her new bedroom or I could paint over the accent furniture.

I painted an end table white with the inside pink and we're doing the same with the bookcase he's building. Easy fix if we have a boy someday. It's kind of plain right now, but we're working on artistic accents for the walls with elephants and giraffes and pops of pink and teal. Overall we're really happy that we compromised this way, neither of us got what we wanted, but we agreed that when she's older if she wants to do a space or farm animal theme, then we'll do it.

I'm planning to go neutral with pops of color so that the room can grow with her. I really like the picture above and plan to borrow heavily from it when I get a chance to decorate the nursery (moving in October).

My husband and I had a deal that if the baby was a boy he would get to do an all out Star Wars nursery and if it was a girl we'd go my route (which was basically princess-y pink, grey, and gold). Well, when we found out girl I decided Star Wars artwork wouldn't be bad and found some really cute ideas on pinterest and etsy. And he is in love with it and it eased his "sadness" over not getting his little boy. Not that he was sad, but his best friend for the last 10 years just had a son and he had visions of them growing up together. Now the visions have changed to our daughter marrying his son.... Men. Haha.

I'm going to go crazy my theme will be all things girly I can't help but buy bits and bobs. I made this today :) I want to have a shabby-chic nursery ive got an antique rocking chair and fairy lights already.
  • I feel like they outgrow themes too fast and it's best to stay neutral

Thanks for all the tips! We have pretty much decided on animals but he wants the whole set stuff, bedding, wall stuff and all and I want more neutral and natural animals. I just want to do some simple wall hangings with deer, bear squirrels..that kinda thing and throw in some bright colors with the bedding and accents around the room...I think he has problems seeing my plan so I might just have to throw it together so he can actually see it to understand!
