Severe nausea and vomiting!! Zophran!

I am a first time mommy and now at 13 weeks and since week 4 I have done nothing but sleep and throw up!! I've already been hospitalized for dehydration and have currently lost 15lbs! After 4 different anti-nausea medications I finally broke down and started taking Zophran. I've heard a lot of negative things about this medication but it was either take Zophran or become so sick that I couldn't even keep a sip of water down. Please tell me I'm not the only one who has gone through this!! My soul feels like its slowly dying, making it very hard to be excited for my first child.

  • Don't worry you are not alone. I am going through the same thing. I've been on Zofran for over a month. This is my third pregnancy and I suffered the same all day sickness and throwing up with all my pregnancies for the entire 9 months. But don't worry for most people nausea goes away around the second trimester. Its not easy but when your baby is born it will all feel worth it.

  • Your not the only one! I lost 5 pounds, but at 110 to start with my doctor was concerned, also because I'm high risk. I've researched it and found for me personally it was better to take. Couldn't even hold 3 sips of water down or even a single cracker. At that point it's risky... I did my research and I'm ok with taking zofran. Also they say after taking it in your 10th or 11th week your risks go down tremendously because the baby is mostly developed (baby can't have cleft lip, of lips are already formed). my soon to be mother in law gave me a hard time but I kinda kept that line not to be crossed because I'm doing what my doctor wants me to be doing. It's not healthy to loose weight when your pregnant. You have to do what's best for you, take the meds if you need then and call it a day. Ps I've done research and I'm calling major bull shit on the lawsuit.
  • My friend took Zofran her entire pregnancy and her baby is just fine. :)
  • I was so sick I thought I was dying been on zofran since week 9 I will be 13w Sunday. Don't worry everything will be fine!
  • Did alot of research on zofran because i was throwing up like 7-11 times a day. Majority of the studies showing malformations like cleft palate were in patients who took it in their first trimester before 10 weeks when the baby is developing.

You're in week 13 so do what you have to do if zofran helps.

Try changing your prenatal vitamins. Multiple friends told me that it can be that too. When I switched my prenatal vitamins my nausea and vomiting decreased to 2 times a day. I take the prenatal gummies. I think it's the iron in most prenatal vitamins that make people nauseous. The gummies don't have iron which is the only downside but I just make sure I try to eat things with iron in it. At least I can eat now! :)
  • I took Zofran from week 8 through most of my pregnancy and DS is fine.  I didn't take it every single day, just on really bad days.  I'm a little skeptical of those studies, anyway.  The FDA hasn't determined that they are valid yet.  If it was a big concern, they'd pull it right away and wait for the results.  I wouldn't worry about it.  MH is a pharmacist that tends to be conservative and he was fine with me taking it.

  • Has anyone been prescribed diclegis for hypermesis? I have been dealing with sickness since week 4.zofram did not work for me been in the hospital 3 times and lost 13 pounds, I am 12 weeks today.
  • I always warn people against taking zofran but in your case it sounds as if the benefit outweighs the risks. You need to be able to keep yourself hydrated and be able to get in some food. If it helps take it. It really sounds like you need it.

I had that first before zofran and honestly zofran worked better for me. with diclegis I was still vomiting every morning and felt sick but I wasn't vomiting 10-15 times a day anymore.
  • I took zofran during my first pregnancy for 6 months and everything was fine. I am now on diclegis and it's really helped me although I still have some nausea. Mainly when I'm hungry. It's been great so far though.
