Geographic Tongue?

Ive never had this before but through research im pretty sure I have it now. Apparently it can happen during pregnancy due to hormonal changes or vitamin deficiency. I haven't been taking my pre-natal vitamin bc it makes me nauseous and I end up taking Zofran to counteract that. Its been awhile so tonight im trying the vitamins again to see if that helps. I also have a cold right now so perhaps thats aggravating it as well.

Does anyone else deal with this issue? Any recommendations to make things better? ?

Re: Geographic Tongue?

  • I don't think have geographic tongue, per se, but I get painful blisters on my tongue constantly. I try to avoid foods that make it worse, but sometimes it will flare when I drink water. My OB during my first pregnancy prescribed me liquid lidocaine to make "magic mouthwash" with maalox and children's benadryl. It's a swish and spit, so you don't actually ingest the meds. Maybe try something that coats your mouth (maybe maalox) as a swish and spit?

I've had this for a few years now..but it's got worse during this pregnancy. I try to avoid foods that set it off because sometimes it can hurt..like citrus.

But actually it's nothing to worry about. :)

  • I have it and have for years. Pineapple has been the worst.
  • Had it sine I can remember. There is a mouthwash your dentist can order called chlorahexidine it is safe during pregnancy.
  • I've had it my whole life but it's really never caused any problems for me at all.
  • I was born with it, doesnt really cause any problems as far as I know, just looks odd

  • I've had it since childhood but it rarely bothers me
  • Soooo never heard of geographic tongue before, but if your prenatal a make you nauseated, check out the vitafusion gummy prenatal vitamins! They have everything in them you're supposed to take anyways, except for iron (because they kind of look like candy, they don't want a kid to find them, eat a bunch, and get overloaded on iron). But that was perfect for me, because with my first pregnancy, no matter when it was during my pregnancy (even in the third tri), I threw up any vitamin with iron in it. So you just need to make sure you get enough in your diet (grains, dark leafy greens, protein). Target also carries a generic version!

I second the gummy option if you are struggling with your vitamins. In the 1st trimester I had both gummies and pills, and ate a few gummies anytime I felt too queasy for the pills. They were yummy, too! I had the Kroger generic brand.
