Registry HELP!

Soo registry advice. Its time to start planning the baby shower and my friends are looking at me crazy cuz I have no idea what I want/need and im torn on if I should do a registry and how. What price range of stuff do you put on your registry? Like I know my family wants to pitch in to buy some of the bigger items(stroller, crib etc) so do I do a separate registry for that? And if I do does it look like im expecting them to buy the bigger stuff? Or do I do away with a registry all together and just be thankful for whatever I end up with? And how many different places do I register? I just feel like registries get presumptuous and place limitations on what people WANT to do for you. Help! Lol

Whew sorry so long

Re: Registry HELP!

  • At some places, such as Babies R Us they will give you a completion certificate, I think it's for everything left on your registry you can purchase afterward for 10% off.  So even if no one purchase bigger items, you can always get them after the baby is born with the discount.  Although, some people like to spend more or go in on a big item as a group so it's nice to have a good price range on your registry.  We chose to do Babies R Us and Target for registries because they are both very popular in our area.  Other people opt for Amazon or the one where you can link registries from multiple places (can't think of the name).

You can use google to search baby registry checklists for suggestions of items to put on it or ask friends for their preferences on must have items.  Everyone is different.  Here's a good place to start.  I really enjoyed Lucie's list for baby registry items.  It explains different options on items and has favorites in each category as well.  https://www.lucieslist.com/baby-registry-basics/

  • I'd put it all on there. Just make sure you have items with a range of prices so folks can decide what to spend.  And I second Lucie's List.

  • I put everything I thought I would need on our two registries.  Most places have a completion discount, so anything you don't get you can buy yourself off the registry for less.  The discount is especially useful for the big stuff, much of which I expect to buy with my husband anyway. If you put a range of items with many different costs on it and no one will give it a second thought.  Registries are so common now that I don't think anyone really views them as presumptuous.  I actually like to buy off registries and see them as helpful.  People will buy what they want to buy, whether from the registry or not.  People get excited to buy baby things (at least I do!) so they are happy to do it either way!  :)

I wouldn't worry about a registry looking presumptuous. Pretty much everyone has one, and most people understand that you are using it to keep track of things you want for baby. Every baby shower I've even been to has had registry information included, and I like buying things that the mom-to-be wants. I also understand that she doesn't expect me to buy the $300 stroller on there. I would just have a good mix of less expensive items so your guests have lots of things to pick from.

Also, I was invited to a wedding last year and the bride didn't have a registry anywhere and I was like "what the hell!" Turns out she just wanted money. So, I would say do your guests a favor and register for something.
  • I would just register for it all. We registered for things ranging for $3 (pacifiers) to $500 (stroller). My husband was uncomfortable with registering for nipple cream so I took it off. I felt guilty for registering for a $300 crib mattress (we wanted organic) so we bought it for ourselves. Just do whatever makes you comfortable
  • Nipple cream is on a separate list I'm keeping on Target.com. It will go on the registry after the shower is over haha.
  • @Krysta6 I just cracked up over the nipple cream thing. I'm going to tell my husband that.

@BrooklynBroussard I had no problem registering for that! He was like isn't that personal? I am registering for a breasts pump too (insurance won't cover) so I'm like how is this different? Men are weird!
  • My husband and I have only perused the baby section at a few stores.  I know we need to get registering.  Sometimes I hate doing it too early as I don't want things to end up being clearanced out before the shower.  And yes put everything!  I already had a few friends that told me they would like to go in together to get me a crib so you have to take that into consideration.  And then of course put it all on there for the discounts.  I remember at Kohls and Target for my wedding registry I ended up getting 20% off or something towards anything I purchased off of the registry.  I don't know what to register for either and DH wants to be involved so I'm going to take him first....then secretly take my sister later to show me what I really need and don't need (or at least ask her advice).

I put everything on my registry just because I'm also kind of using it as a checklist. We already bought a few things that I had put on there so I just marked them as completed. Like others said some companies give you a completion discount, so if it's stuff you're planning on buying anyway, you can save some money on it. Just make sure to have a wide range of price points. Anyone who doesn't want to spend the cost of what's on your registry can always purchase off registry or give you cash or a gift card instead.
  • I agree with the others, put it all on the registry! :) I registered at Target and they have a 15% off completion coupon for afterwards. I have ranges from $1(pacifier) to $299(travel system) and feel people will choose what they want to spend. It's a great way to keep a visual checklist!!
  • I think it's worth putting lots on your registry. Some people like to gift baskets with lots of little things. Others like to go in on a big gift. Have a variety of items and prices. If no one buys certain items, you can go afterwards and buy those things with the discount you get (completion coupon). So I say list diapers, wipes, etc. Things that you will continue to need. Then stock up using the discount (even pair it with coupons!).
  • Exactly what pp said, put it all on the registry. The completion discount really helps with all the stuff left to purchase. It is a wish list, not a demand. People will buy you what they feel comfortable spending. Enjoy registering!

  • Babylist is the BEST registry!!! You can add things like favors (people bring you food once baby is born) or from stores like target and anything online like etsy! It's free and super easy - then you won't be limited to one particular place and people can price shop, use coupons, etc.
