School-Aged Children

ptosis surgery

has anyone taken their children to get this type of surgery done? at what child age did you do it? any complications, side effect? did you have to redo surgery again?

I'm researching whether I should do it for my kid, he's 8 years old. Would like to do it before he's 18, after that insurance won't be paying it. I also would like to do it as early as possible. you know kids these days, afraid he would be teased. He has had several people asking him about his eyes, he gets to a point where his response is like none of your business attitude talk.

my pediatric ophthalmologist doesn't do this type of surgery. I'm located in orange county California.

Any recommendation? thanks in advance.

Re: ptosis surgery

  • Hm... I don't have any familiarity with this type of surgery.  I googled it, and found this article, which seems pretty complete and not too technical.  I'm sure you've already googled and found the same article, though.

As a kid, I was "tongue tied" in a way that didn't affect my speech, but my dentist was worried would affect the gums behind my front teeth as I got older.  When I was 12, I had an in-office procedure with an oral surgeon to correct it.  I was under general anesthesia, had sutures under my tongue, and had to take it easy and eat a restricted diet for a few days.  My mom scheduled it for the summer instead of the school year.  I did not go to a pediatric specialist, just a regular oral surgeon.  It was fine.  I was in his office for maybe 2 hours total and then for a follow up check.

If my kid had to have minor surgery such as yours, I'd also want to do it during the summer (but maybe that's because I'm a teacher and I'm also home on break.)  I would want to do it as soon as I felt my child was old enough to understand what was going to happen and cooperate with after-care.  Ideally, it would be great to get it done before middle school.  So, any time in the next year or so would seem ideal, unless there's a medical reason to wait until the child is older so that the tissues are bigger.  But for that, you'll have to check with your doctor.

Good luck with the decision and with finding a doctor!
