Getting sick of the "don't eat this. Don't eat that"

This is my second pregnancy. I have a healthy, beautiful son. I ate healthy but normal with him.

This pregnancy I've been following the rules for the most part, but I've been getting sick of the don'ts in eating..
I just read that eating peanutbutter or peanuts more than twice a week can in turn make baby allergic to them...
WHAT?
Nuts are healthy and have always been on the safe side. Now I go and read on this bump site that it's now potentially bad if I don't limit myself?

I eat healthy, and I'm starting to just eat what I want. I had a hotdog today. I eat lunch meats. (I make sure they're cooked). I have coffee in the morning and maybe a glass of soda at dinner. I drink enough water to last me a week. I'm gonna continue to eat my apples and peanut butter. I snack on cashews, macadamia nuts, and sunflower seeds.

I am just so fed up with all the "do this, don't do that", when it comes to eating..
They didn't have half of these studies or warnings when my grandmother was pregnant for my mother.

Sorry about the rant, it's been a long week already and hormones are raging tonight..

  • I hear yah! My doctor even told me to stay away from seafood ENTIRELY for the next 9 months.
I still eat sandwich meats also, have had fish (limited I will say though, and other things I 'shouldn't' be eating)
Now, I wouldn't be going out eating raw cookies or anything, but I think it's all in moderation and using your own judgment.

  • I find that whole thing hilarious because peanuts aren't even nuts. They're legumes! Same as beans, lentils and peas. Things have gotten ridiculous over the years.

That's interesting, my OBGYN told me that since my last child the rules on seafood have changed. Your allowed to eat more.

  • People have been eating nuts for AGES while pregnant, while young, etc. and yet nut allergies have only become a huge epidemic recently, it's either as @Blueyedsky said because people are being TOO careful about nuts or something else entirely (blame environment, pesticides in food, whatever crap people always blame), but eating nuts while pregnant can't possibly be to blame when there used to be maybe 1 kid in an entire elementary school with a nut allergy and now it's this horrible epidemic where classrooms have to be entirely nut free...
I had a fight with the school of my friend's child. I had been watching them for some time and bringing them to school, packing lunches and snacks, et cetera.

They demanded that absolutely no nuts could be in any of the lunches of snacks because of a peanut allergy. I informed them that peanuts were legumes and if this were a TREE NUT allergy then that would make sense, but if it's just peanuts they were concerned about then students could bring TREE NUTS, which included walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios and so on or seeds like sesame and sunflower.

They told me I was wrong. A peanut's a nut and that no nuts were allowed. The issue with this particular school was just the peanut epidemic.

    I was just . . . Ugh.

  • Funny I was told to eat all the nuts I want during pregnancy and to consume nuts while breastfeeding too. To help with nut allergies. Kinda think it's all mumbo jumbo but I don't plan on giving up my trail mix any time soon.
  • My doctor told me to eat whatever I want. My body will crave what I need and what I don't need my body will most likely reject it anyways. He said all of it is BS (his actual words) and everyone is going by the nanny days. The reason there are so many allergies these days is because of people avoiding nuts, dairy, and so on.. He said we turned out ok didn't we? He also said the occasional glass of red wine is actually ok for you as it has anti oxidants in. And Guinness has iron!
He obviously said don't over do it and stay healthy, don't smoke and all, but I kind of agree with him..
My mum had prawns, mayonnaise, hot dogs and so on when she was pregnant with me and I'm fine! :)
  • Nov 15 lurker here

I'm now 21 weeks. I've eaten sushi a few times, I've had goats cheese, I've eaten cold deli meat, runny yolk eggs and I have almond butter every morning in my smoothie.

I'm fine, my baby is fine and developing well. I was told by my midwife to eat peanuts, because avoiding them can cause intolerance in the baby. All other nuts and nut butters are totally fine btw.

  • I probably
Had peanut butter every other day when I was pregnant with DS. I even gave him peanut butter at probably 7-8 months old. The rules with feeding baby now are, there are no rules other than honey and milk after 1 (unless family history of allergies).

As for the nut-free school, administration has to do their best to protect all children. Even if protecting one means limiting the others. Can you imagine if it were your child that was deathly allergic to peanuts or any nut? Kids with peanut allergies are sometimes also allergic to tree nuts (some research says up to 40%) regardless of whether or not it is a nut or legume. Furthermore, from an administrative point of view, it is a lot easier to regulate the whole situation by saying no nuts whatsoever (including peanuts). I would hate to be the person responsible for sending a child into an anaphylactic reaction!
  • Also, I eat pretty much everything. I did avoid raw fish with last pregnancy but I still eat cooked sushi. So what if they use the same knife! I also avoided unpasteurized cheeses but eat feta almost every day in my salad. As long as soft cheese is pasteurized it's ok. I eat my egg yolk runny, deli meats cold and hot dogs. Enjoy your food and don't stress about what to eat/not eat!
  • I've never heard the pb thing while pregnant. We gave our kids pb when they started eating solids.

The only thing I avoid is alcohol. Everything else I just use common sense.

There's another 3 page thread about this at the bottom of page 2 called "I'm so bad". You'll find a lot of us don't follow all the "rules". :)

  • I pretty much eat what I want in moderation, like today I had a salmon/avocado roll (raw!). I also eat poached eggs almost every morning now that eggs don't disgust me anymore (thank god). I think America has gotten a bit out of hand with rules. Lots of other countries each fish, raw fish, and unpasturized foods just simply because it's farm fresh and fresh caught! Know your sources. That's the most important thing. Read the label, see where the product came from, not where it was manufactured. Check for GMO, check for bad oils, check for preservatives and artificial fillers. It's allll good. Nuts are good. Beans are good.
  • My SO's dad is allergic to nuts. SO's mom ate nothing but pb and j sandwiches when she was pregnant with my SO. He can eat any nut he wants. Sounds like a myth to me. Check out the thread "I am so bad" - it's like a food confessional.
  • Just to add, the only thing will not eat is beansprouts.
  • I have never heard the nut thing before. I went into my first OB/GYN appointment thinking she was going to tell me to stop eating a list of things. She actually told me that the only thing she wanted me to limit was my coffee (1 cup per day) and don;t eat tuna more than once a week. I can have hot dogs, lunch meats, and nuts!
  • I had sushi two days ago. One roll was fried and the other had cooked salmon. Bitty and I were quite pleased with ourselves after, I don't mind telling you :)
  • I'm with you on that! I have been SUPER paranoid about everything that I eat. This is my first pregnancy so I have really been trying to do things by the books. However, it has only been 4 weeks since I found out that I am pregnant, and I am already exhausted with this whole "eat this, don't eat that" thing. I'm going to try to eat as healthy as possible, continue drinking water, and exercising when I can. But if I want to eat that damn peanut butter and jelly sandwich more than twice a week, I'm going to eat it.

PB was one of the few things I could choke down during first tri with my kids and neither has an allergy. Delaying introduction has been reversed, BTW. Now pedis say delaying is probably making allergies worse.

I eat everything. Sushi, lunch meat, runny yolks. All of it. You're more likely to get sick from produce. I even drink wine 2-3x a week in the last tri. Studies have shown kids of moms who drink lightly are actually smarter and more socially adjusted.

  • I have been eating nuts and peanut butter like they are going out of style!
  • Peanut butter on an English muffin is one of the few things I can stomach when I have little appetite, and is probably one of the healthiest things I'm able stomach period this past month...if kids get allergic to what mom eats while pregnant then my poor kid will be allergic to peanut butter, carbs, potato chips, and fruit smoothies, since that's 99% of my diet recently, haha

  • Nuts are fine, that study is hotly debated and if anything make kids more allergic as PP said.

Fish that is low in mercury and high in Omega 3s are good for you, because Omega 3s make your baby smarter. Fish is definitely fine, but don't go eating tons of high mercury fish.

The not eating stuff raw is dumb. You are more susceptible to food poisoning while pregnant, yes. But you won't hurt your baby if you get food poisoning, it will just be unpleasant. The only other thing besides mercury you really need to watch out for is listeria, so thoroughly wash all fruits and veggies and consume lunchmeats or unpasteurized cheeses from reputable sources. That's it! If you get Listeria you can actually hurt your baby, so I'm really careful about anything that could have it. Everything else is BS basically.

  • I'm not a seafood eater and never will be. I have a very awesome, yet quite laid back OB. I ate what I wanted when I wanted with my daughter and she came out healthy as can be with no problems at all! The only problem she has is being all girl and full of attitude! Hahaha! This time he said, Kaylin turned out perfect. You eat what you want when you want just like last time and I think we'll be just find for #2. ;)

I eat chips when I want chips and a banana when I want one of those. I eat spicy when I crave spicy and lemons if I was something sour. I drink coke because it calms my tummy from the horrible nausea I tend to keep all pregnancy. I eat what I want when I want it and go from there.
  • See! That's exactly it. Difference of opinions I guess. I will eat what I like, within moderation :)
  • For my first baby I was pretty particular, for my second a little less, for this one I am not too worried about it!(and neither is my Dr.) Everything in moderation...I'm sure I'll have a few glasses of wine in the last tri too. I am always careful about refrigeration and expiration dates all the time anyway. I just try to use good sense and I know LO will be just fine :)
