Sharp pain upper abdominal area

Last night I had by far the worst pain I've ever felt...I was laying on my right side and as I was moving to turn on my left I had a burning sharp almost like someone was cutting me open pain that went straight across my upper stomach right under the breast area. It put me in tears, and is still sore. I'm guessing I had almost like a pinched nerve or a Charlie horse? I'm not really sure. I have a doctor appointment Friday morning and I was going to talk to my doctor about it. I'm 23w3d, my son is sitting super low and have been having the weight pain the past week or so, so I was thinking it was round ligament pain too. Has anyone else had this happen to them?

Re: Sharp pain upper abdominal area

  • Pain in the right upper abdomen could be gallbladder. Did you get nauseous at all with the pain? Was it after you ate? Any changes with bowel movements? Sorry for all the questions- I just go into Dr mode. Feel free to send me a personal message if you would prefer.

No nausea or anything, just felt more like muscle spasm or cramp. Started on the left side then moved all the way to the right. It happened at about 2am after I was already passed out. It truly felt like I was being cut open. Bowel movements haven't been too out of whack considering the normal pregnancy constipation. For a couple weeks now I've had like a static tingle in the same area (Like if your hand falls asleep) before it happened which makes me think my stomach area is just stretching?
  • Could be the stomach stretching or the expansion of the rib cage. The rib cage is getting wider as all the organs are being shifted to make room for baby. Big thing to rule out with the spot you were describing is something gallbladder related but doesn't sound like it. Usually it gets worse after eating, especially if fatty or greasy food, also causes diarrhea. I would ask your doctor on Friday morning just to be sure.
  • I had the exact same thing happen to me, however my ache and pain has lasted and has not gone away for weeks. It scares me, I got my blood work done to rule out gallbladder and any other organs having a problem yet thankfully everything came back fine. Then I happened to talk with a mom that has had two babies. Her first question to me was, " is your baby breech right now?" I am 24 weeks and they told me at the anatomy scan that he is breech at the moment but they are not worried because he might turn later. She said she always had that constant pain, same spot upper admomen right under breast with both her breech pregnancies. I am convinced that must be what is causing the pain. I seem to be carrying very high and his head must be pressing on nerves or pushing on something:/ hope your pain doesn't continue. Good luck and I am glad you can ask your doctor about it.
  • Thanks ladies! And as of my first anatomy scan, he is breach so that would make sense! It's just right there under by beast area straight across. Hopefully my doctor will have answers for me!
  • Find a Webster certified Chiropractor. It can help baby to turn on its own and maybe help with this discomfort.
