Fears developed during pregnancy?

i was wondering if anyone developed any new fears since becoming pregnant?

With my first pregnancy I developed a major fear of tornadoes. Living in Florida we don't get many, but if it thunders, hails, and winds get higher than 50 mph I am convinced there is a tornado coming.

This pregnancy, my fear is weirder. Fish. For some reason, if the fish is alive and swimming I freak out. Even goldfish! I can't explain it, and I know that the fish won't hurt me (mainly because I won't get close enough) but something about them terrifies me.

Just like the tornadoes, I start to panic and my BP sky rockets while I struggle to breathe.

Am I the only weirdo?

Re: Fears developed during pregnancy?

  • Ticks. I obsess about them every second I am outside. But I've never lived in an area where they were a problem before. Now I am in upstate NY and every time I step outside I have lymes disease on the mind. It is annoying.

  • I feel more afraid of spiders now- or any kind of bug really. I'm super paranoid about being bitten by one while pregnant and I get some strange/scary reaction to it. Ugh, anything that has more legs or eyes than me makes me feel faint.
  • @Carmofrap we get ticks so bad in our area! I'm NEVER outside because the thought of them makes my skin crawl.

@elmann1 pretty much all bugs are bad in my book! I go overboard on the cleaning and constant spraying for bugs. The amount of rain we have been having has been driving palmetto bugs in and they are GROSS!
  • I'm afraid now of home invasions. I live in a very safe neighborhood, and we have security, but I am ready to kick someone ass every time I hear a bump in the night. I've always kind of been this way, but now it's in high gear! Don't mess with the pregnant lady!

Yes! During my first pregnancy our house was broken into, robbed, and set on fire while we were gone! Thankfully we got home shortly after the fire started and put it out and later found out it was a family member who did it. But I still don't feel comfortable in our house three years later!

And you can bet every room has a fire extinguisher in it!
  • With DS1 I was scared of going into labor in the subway/train....with this one I'm scared of big crowds ...like DH wanted to go into the city just to hang out and I couldn't I got a sort of panic attack..i live in NYC its not the kind of place to be scared of crowds....but I just seem to worry about it specially w all the terrorist stuff going on and how there have been a few plots where ppl were arrested , it just scares me !

  • That is the worst place to live with a fear of large crowds! Hope it gets better!
  • I'm just even more terrified of labor than I was before, lol.
  • I'm just even more terrified of labor than I was before, lol.

Awe, I'm sure we are all terrified of labor to some extent. That hadn't entered my mind yet!

and its totally a pregnancy thing ... I was fine b4 I'd go to the city alllllll the time now i can't even deal with the train to get to the city...I love where I live I hope it all goes away soon!

  • I hope so too!
  • I have become obsessed (OBSESSED) with planning for a disaster. Like a major scale we are out of power for a year or more disaster. Terrorists or another country destroying our power grid. I have added like 3k of supplies to my Amazon cart like I could actually buy (or should) all of it. So ridiculous but I can't help it!
  • I'm actually terrified of the blood glucose test (mine is Friday). I'm overweight but active, I've only gained 6lbs, and eat healthy, but I'm really worried. Mostly because needles have always scared me so the thought of doing blood pricks daily freaks me out.

@knottymomma I've developed a fear of tornados too. Only I live in St Louis so they happen pretty often here.

I've also developed a fear of car accidents because I'm afraid of hurting the baby.
  • @twogirlsandagreen I know people who are afraid of the same thing. Their must watch show is that Dooms Day Prepper show. And they go to the extreme. It's a fairly reasonable fear, having no electricity for an extended period of time!

@intheversa I hope y'all don't have any serious storms! And the car accident thing, I totally get.
  • Let it out! I still fret over my DD and she will be three in December! I think checking for blood or worrying about movement is common. I know I do those as well and most of my friends mention the same concerns. We all need to relax, I know easier said than done.

Yes yes yes! I am so scared of this! Especially when hubby isn't home :(. The thought is so scary.
  • I have a deep, deep, deep irrational fear that once I give birth my baby will fall onto the subway tracks. I've even had dreams about it. The millions of people born and raised in NYC prove that most likely won't happen, but I am still a complete nut job about it.

  • Honestly, I'm afraid that I wouldn't be able to go back to my pre-pregnant body shape and skin condition. I know it isn't much of a problem but nevertheless, I cant get it out of my head. :(

I also fear of hurting my infant while I'll be trying to tend to his needs. I'm afraid that I would accidentally hurt him physically, like dropping him or breaking his arm/leg. It freaks me out.
  • Babies are resilient. My daughter was five weeks old and rolled off a (low) ottoman and onto the floor. She didn't cry at all. I bawled for an hour.
  • My biggest fear would have to be a home invasion. Especially when DH isn't home. When I'm home alone (especially at night), I swear I hear someone trying to knock down our front door. I've never had this fear until I got pregnant. Thankfully I'm hardly ever home alone at night, and my two very protective dogs sleep with us, so I do end up feeling safe. I just want to make sure my baby is always protected!

  • Car accidents. Soooo paranoid!!! I got in a pretty bad one last year. I wasn't majorly hurt, but my car was totaled and my backseat was smashed in. I was rear ended on the freeway. I was a little paranoid at first, but ever since I became pregnant I am SO bad. I am even worried about my mom, husband, sister, etc driving!
  • @knottymomma thought of you last night! We were at the Muny (outdoor theater in St. Louis) and a storm came up. I watched it get closer and closer and I started to panic. There was a rotation spotted north of St Louis so I started to think one would be produced from that storm. They finally stopped the show. It stormed so bad on the way home I started panicking about a car accident. The roads kept flooding and people were driving like maniacs. We finally got home, it stormed all night and I kept listening for sirens. It's supposed to storm all day so hopefully they don't get too dangerous.

I wouldn't worry too much in Florida. We have major temperature shifts here and that's what causes it. I've only had three come close to me. One hit my office building, one hit while I was leaving work, and one went over our house without touching down. So while yes they can happen, I'm sure you will be OK.

I think we all have fears, especially while we're pregnant because we have so much to worry about. My DH told me recently that this has been the longest 25 weeks of his life. We've known since 3 weeks. He said the first 20 he was terrified that something would go wrong. Now he feels like it's taking forever and he's more scared of what can go wrong verses the thought of being a father for the first time. So I think in general we're all just normal people with reasonable fears.
  • My husband is going camping this weekend for a bachelor party and I forced him to pack a first aid kit and basically anything needed for any situation. I told him to text me through the weekend so I know he's alive??!? Who am I???  I have never been this crazy but lately I fear EVERYTHING!

  • @intheversa oh man! I would have freaked out! I've only seen one storm when I was out in Kentucky when I was 8. It scared the crap out of me. We've had quite a few in the surrounding towns that have done some damage. And I can remember one time that I was home alone with DD and a message came over my phone that a tornado was spotted within a 2 mile radius of our house. Scariest day of my life.

We found out at 3 weeks about our monster too! Only about 4 more months before they induce me!!
  • I turn into a germaphobe with every pregnacy. I wipe everything. My kids actually get baths. I'm constantly washing my hands.
  • I get paranoid someone snatched my kids out of their beds.... like I get up in the middle of the night and check on them. We live in a very safe neighborhood and have bars on their windows (so they don't fall out and to possibly deter someone from trying to get in). I do it occasionally when not pregnant, but I'm a little crazier about it when pregnant.
  • Im with you all on home invasion. I have nightmares where im half awake and I think someone is in my bedroom and is going to rape me ( I know..totally psychotic) I just have this huge rape fear. I actually scream in my sleep because a truly feel someone is there. So much so I try to wake myself up but in so out of it I cant. I totally blame it on watching police mystery type shows.

My husband leaves really early in the morning and I told him he has to shut our bedroom door all the way when he leaves bc I dont like that someone could sneak into our room without a chance of me hearing the door open.

I also have a fear of someone taking my daughter from her room at night. I have had other violent dreams of me having to shoot people trying to take her.

For some reason I have really violent dreams. I don't know why.

I haven't had these dreams in awhile so hopefully im moving past my fears.
  • My goodness! I couldn't imagine having dreams about those things! Paranoia is horrible! And I'll be honest my mom's words always haunt me.

'Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean someone isn't out to get you.'

I hear it every time I leave my house.
  • I have paranoia like crazy, especially when it comes to my family... One thing that drives me crazy (thanks to pictures seen on Facebook) are huge snakes slithering through pipes and coming up out of toilets... I am scared to go pee at night, it's silly, but I'm afraid lol
  • @komorebi Honestly I'm terrified of craigslist because of those crazy people who abduct pregnant women for their babies. One woman went to another woman's home for baby clothes. The woman attacked her, cut the baby out and left her. Both the woman and the baby died sadly. If I'm looking for a deal I go to garage sales or graciously accept free baby stuff from my friends. I won't go near craigslist. Plus I look around me when I'm out, just in case.

  • @komorebi and @intheversa
I completely agree! I've always been skeptical of craigslist though due to weirdos. I believe some of those abductions also happened in CO. where I'm now a resident of. I don't mean to fear monger or make it worse but, after my best friend told me about the Craigslist stories I saw a crazier story on the ID channel. A lady had stalked baby registries, got into contact with a random woman and essentially became friendly with her and attempted to murder the mom and take the baby. The stalker had a very extensive past of mental disorders, but she even pretended to be pregnant and had a full nursery set up. The victim totally survived unharmed. It just goes to show that you should never put your guard down and always be aware.
  • I would say my fears have actually subsided thankfully! In college I had really serious hypochondria and I was worried it would come back in full swing being pregnant. Surprisingly, I've done a really good job of not searching every symptom and staying pretty calm when I am worried about something weird!
  • I've become extremely paranoid about car accidents as well. It hasn't kept me from driving, but I have become hyper vigilant when driving (and angrier at people who make mistakes when driving).
  • I have a germ phobia. Doesn't help that I'm in health care. Use hand sanitizer and wash my hands constantly. My worst irrational fear this pregnancy has been listeria. I'm super weird about things being cooked right and washed and I'm kind of afraid to eat fresh produce even though I know it's good for me. I got sick off of celery and carrots early on this pregnancy and I've gotten salmonella several times in my life from different foods. I hate it! It makes my husband so frustrated with me but I won't eat things that aren't washed right and I throw food out if I suspect anything.

Oh man! You must not be from the south! I've had friends who get in their car and a snake (baby one but still snake) comes out of the AC vents. Just trying to get out of the heat.
