Low TSH Level

I got my blood work back and everything looks normal except for my TSH level.  I got a TSH 3rd generation test done and my value is 0.14.  The chart shows the following normal pregnancy ranges:

First trimester 0.26-2.66
Second trimester 0.55-2.73
Third trimester 0.43-2.91

It's been 3 days, and I haven't received a call from my OBGYN yet.  Should I be concerned?  Anyone gone through this that can help me understand the risks?  There's so much stuff out there on the internet that I'm not sure what to expect.  I've always had a fast metabolism, so I'm also wondering if maybe my value *could* be normal for me....I was 8 weeks and 4 days when I got the lab work done.

I believe the HCG works in the same way as TSH. So for many women, the TSH gets supressed. TSH's purpose is to stimulate the thyroid to produce Thyroid hormone. Did they check the rest of the hormones in a thyroid panel or just the TSH?

  • Don't worry too much about it. My Tsh level was 0.06 my doctor explained that this is a normal thing that can happen and the cause is pregnancy in most cases. she also mentioned women who suffer more with nausea and vomiting tend to have low Tsh levels. I have to have another blood test done to compare numbers before they determine whether I need any kind of treatment. I spent a lot of time googling things freaking myself out, but when I spoke with the doctor she didn't seem too concerned. she said as long as I am gaining weight and feel ok it likely won't be a problem. I've decided not to worry about it and figure things out one step at a time.

  • I had a low tsh level. They ran a free t3 and t4 to see if those were in normal range. They were so they said the tsh being low was just a side effect of first trimester and nothing to worry about. If my t3 or t4 was abnormal they would have put me on a medication daily to help. This they said would have made sure baby did have any ill effects or cognitive delays due to the tsh level being low.

    Good luck.
  • Thanks ladies, I feel so much better! I have nausea but it's not bad at all - really subsides when I can finally get myself to eat something. Not throwing up or anything. I'll just wait to hear back from my doctor on whether she wants to do any further testing and not worry too much for now.

Ok, let's see if the 3rd time is the charm...

Pregnancy triggered my hyperthyroidism, I was at.01. I had major fatigue and I was losing a lot of weight. I avg 102lbs and I was down about 6lbs which worried me bc I wanted to make sure the baby was getting enough nutrients. I haven't had any morning sickness and am eating constantly (lots of carbs too, which have been fun, lol). My doctor referred me to an endocrinologist and after further blood tests, I was put on PTU about a week ago to help balance my levels and hopefully it will help me gain a few lbs. My hubs and I did a lot of research online and it really freaked us out, don't do it...there's so much more negative stories than positive!  If you trust your doctor and they prescribe you something, just take it and it should help. Fingers crossed for a healthy pregnancy for you @trisham1201
