October 2015 Moms

how was your appt after anatomy scan?

So I had my anatomy scan at 20 weeks and the u/s tech basically told us everything looked great. Everything looked normal all was good and the doctor will discuss everything with you next appt. Well today was my next appt and he just said "you had your anatomy scan and it was good, right?" And I was like yeah are we going to discuss it? So we went to his office and he looked at his computer and said everything looks perfect you have a normal baby. I was really excited to discuss his percentiles and such after seeing some moms on here saying things about their scan. has anyone else have just a quick it's normal don't worry appointment? Maybe I'm the kind to just want to know absolutely everything but I just wanted to check and see if any of you had the same thing happen! thanks mommas!

Re: how was your appt after anatomy scan?

  • Yup. Mine just said everything looks good. She did tell me the percentiles of their size Because I'm having twins, but that's it.

  • My doctor doesn't say much at all ever. I asked about the scan and she said "looks great! All normal!" I too was looking for specifics, but got none. When I pried for more information she said "At 20 weeks baby is so small, the details aren't clear, just says growing acceptably well." I was pretty let down. I worked at an emergency animal hospital for years and they always give numbers and details. I figured for humans we would at least get the same care! But honestly animals get better care these days. Lab work is done in an hour in most cases if not by the next day, appointments are better,etc.. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one not getting all in info.
  • I just got baby looked healthy, that he was measuring four days ahead and what he weighed!

  • My doctor is the same, just says "yes, it all looks good" but if I ask specific questions he answers them. For example, we were concerned about the baby developing spina bifida because of medication I am on, so I asked him if they saw anything on the spinal cord, and then he went into more detail for me. I find if I ask a specific question, I get an answer but if I ask just a general "was everything ok" I get a very general response without any details.

If you really want more information and your doctor really sucks at sharing it, you have the legal right to any information in your medical file and could request a copy of the ultrasound report.
  • My dr didn't even have a report yet. She asked if the tech mentioned anything and when I said no she said everything must be fine then. Okay... And I've heard nothing since.
  • I had my original AS at 19 week.
We have to go back for a second AS because Baby was too wiggly, and the tech couldn't get an image of his heart. We spoke to the doctor after the scan. She said everything looked normal, gave me a pamphlet on circumsion, and asked us if we had any questions.
I didn't get any specifics. I wanted to ask what his weight was, but I always forget! Maybe when I go back Thursday at 22.6 weeks, I'll remember to ask!
  • Sounds like a pretty standard response to me. If you are looking for specific information by all means ask.

  • I just got his weight and an "all looks good!" Not a ton of info
  • The tech was the one that gave us the weight and percentile. My doctor basically said that all looked good and that's it.

  • My doc popped in during ultrasound for a couple of minutes and said what she saw looked good. Told me she'd call the next day after the radiologist looked at everything to let me know. End of the next day and there was no call. But my clinic has something called MyChart where I can look at my medical history, vaccines, appointment details, scheduling, etc and I found a new message in there. It had my results and measurements and said baby was in the 36th percentile. So even though she didn't call I still found out what I needed to know, baby looks great!
  • Ours was super short. He said everything looked normal, baby is a good weight and told us the percentile.
  • My doctor opened my chart, said he was perfect, and that was it. Lol

  • My anatomy scan was outsourced to another hospital system from what I normally use. So right after the scan I saw a Dr (not mine, but one from the performing hospital). She told me everything looked fine, no down syndrome markers, baby weighed about 10 ounces, and that the only thing they could not confirm was that her fingers are all seperate as she had them in fists the whole time. Then she said all info will be sent to my Dr and if she has any concerns she will call me. My scan was June 9th and I see my regular Dr on July 2nd. I haven't gotten a phone call or an emergency come in so I don't think I will be getting any new info next week.
  • Mine was right after the scan (10 mins) and she came in said all good no concerns. Then said baby on petite side so want me to come back in 4 weeks to just check growth.
  • It's interesting to me that almost everyone had an U/S technician do the scan and then a quick doctor's visit afterwards. I go to a practice with midwives who do the regular checkup appointments, but it was our doctor who performed the anatomy scan. She mostly just said that things looked good and most of our ultrasound pictures are of body parts (e.g. skeleton, heart, etc.) no cute profile shots, but at least we know he is healthy :)

I think she told us the weight but I heard 1 lb and my husband thought 1.6 lbs (!) which I know is not right, so hopefully we are both remembering wrong and I'm not having a gigantic baby. Our scan was at 21 weeks.

I agree with PP that it seems like you need to ask specific questions if you want specific information, but generally no news is good news since they will let you know if anything is out of the normal ranges I'm sure.
  • I had my AS at 19.5 weeks and was told everything was okay with baby but I have a low Laying placenta, have to go for another scan at 28 weeks to see has it moved up so worried about that, not too informed about what happens when you have a low placenta but know if it stays low will have to have a ceasearean :S any other moms to be in my situation as people are telling me it's not very common? :S
  • I had my doctors appointment immediately following our anatomy scan but basically had the same thing. He just said everything looks perfect!

  • We had multiple scans because he is uncooperative, and each time the doctor mentioned weight only. The last time, once all the pictures were good, she said he looks perfectly healthy and on track. TBH that's all I really needed.

She also kept using the wrong pronoun, which freaked out DH. We know we are having a boy, as 2 different techs confirmed it, but my doctor said "she" twice. I just ignored her slip up.
  • My appointment after the scan was pretty short. My doctor and I chit-chatted for a minute (I absolutely love her), and she said that our little man looks absolutely perfect! We got his weight and everything, but she said there really isn't nothing more to know. She said that it's so much better for the appointment to be short and sweet because everything looks perfect and there's nothing to discuss, than something being wrong and having to weigh all of the options in front of us. I'd rather have short and sweet appointments, than long lengthy ones. If I need to know more info, my doctor would tell me.

  • The visit with the Dr was quick, but I got a more detailed report over email. It told baby's position, placenta's position, amount of amniotic fluid, etc. It also told the different measurements (head, femur, abdomen...) and the amount of weeks old based on the measurements. Like, the head circumference was measuring around the size of a fetus 19 weeks, 4 days old but the abdomen was measuring 20 weeks, 2 days. Here I was worried she'd get her dad's big head.
  • Mine was super quick also. The first couple of appointments like that kind of caught me off guard, but I'm now of the opinion that the less eventful the doctor visit, the better. All I want is a boring, routine pregnancy with nothing weird or complicated!
  • Ever hear the expression no news is good news? I hate to come off as cranky but I would give anything to have my ob say everything looks great. Im 23 weeks and have my 7th ultra sound this afternoon and am hoping, wishing, praying for anything even remotely close to that.

Thank you all for the responses!! I'm glad I'm not the only one. I asked a lot of questions already so I didn't want to keep asking! I'm glad it's all good news though! no news-good news!
  • I had my anatomy scan may 27th. Seen my Dr June 17th, she said baby was perfect, measuring normal and all was good. Our techs won't tell us anything here at all, and unless something is wrong our Dr won't usually go into detail.

Doctor said everything looked good.  I never even thought about the other stuff.  I was just happy to know everything looked good.  He only mentioned not getting a good view of the spine.
