Bug spray recommendations!?!

I will be seeing the doc on Friday and will ask her then, but in the mean time I am open for good bug spray recommendations. I have that gene that the Mosquitos love and they feast on me. I am getting ready for a camping trip and was wondering what you would recommend. I usually use the heavy duty Deet, which specifically says to not use in pregnancy, so that's out! Do those clip on fans work?? Other ideas??

Re: Bug spray recommendations!?!

  • I've heard those repellant bracelets work well!!!

  • I work at a baby boutique (in Canada) and we carry 2 all natural bug sprays that are safe for babies and pregnant women.

Take a hike outdoor Joose. Just google it.

Summer Citronella body mist. - there are a few brands of this, the one we carry is locally made in Alberta Canada so it may be difficult to find out of province.

    Absolutely stay away from DEET!!!

  • I live in northern Ontario (i.e. mosquitos big enough to carry you away lol) and I have found NOTHING that is safe for pregnancy that actually works. The best thing that I find that works and is guaranteed safe is a bug jacket. I'm also really careful about not having any chemicals around though. Those mosquito picks used to work amazingly, but I don't risk being around those chemicals anymore.

My husband has vitamin D patches that he wears and swears work. I haven't read if they're safe for pregnancy (I'd assume so). I just find them annoying because once you take them off, they leave a sticky patch on your skin no matter how hard you scrub. Or you could use baby-safe insect repellant and only put it on your clothing if you're really paranoid? Better than nothing?

Here's a link with a ton of options. Might be easier to pick from this list.

  • I have always used skin so soft from Avon! It's not labeled as mosquito or bug repellent but seems to work! It's an oil for skin or bath. Our neighbors put it in squirt bottles and spray down their horses with it to keep flies off!
  • I use eco smart organic insect repellent. I found it at target. It has no deet. This is what it says on their website------ Safe around children, pets, and the environment Since ’s proprietary botanical oil blends attack attributes that are specific only to pests, they have no effect on people, pets or the environment. The primary active ingredients in products are approved as Direct Food Additives or classified as GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration. These oils are commonly used to add flavor and aroma to many cosmetic, beverage and food products, including cake, candy, sweetener, gum, soft drinks, and lipstick. Children and pets are safe. No need to clear them out after application or be concerned if they are near our products. Our products have no adverse effect on mammals, birds, and fish and also will not contaminate water sources.
  • I just bought OFF botanicals lotion which doesn't contain deet, it does contain lemon eucalyptus oil and apparently works well from what I have read
  • We have a spray made from eucalyptus essential oil. Doesn't work as well as the good poison but it helps. Ugh they love me too!
  • Look for the natural ones will lemongrass and eucalyptus oil. If you are looking for a backyard solution I have heard that if you plant lemongrass it helps keep them away.

I have also tried rubbing a dryer sheet on myself and keeping them in my pocket and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't.

I get eaten by Mosquitos and if there is a tiny spot that I miss with the repellent, they will find it. The ones with deet never really worked for me, but the natural one does.

My neighbor was telling me that Burts Bees makes a very effective one and smells really good (bonus!) I haven't tried it yet because the 3 stores I've looked for it didn't have any.
