Anyone else not have their gallbladder?

I recently had my gallbladder removed in April. It functioned normally during my first pregnancy but began to go bad earlier in the year. Most people with this scenario have to be very careful as to what they eat due to it may run right through them. As my surgeon says "once your gallbladder is removed you only rent your food". I on the other have the opposite effect, I have to take a stool softener to go to the restroom now. My question is, has anyone else had theirs removed? Have you been through pregnancy without it? Did you notice anything different?

Re: Anyone else not have their gallbladder?

  • I had mine removed last October so this is my first pregnancy without one. So now I just have to wait and see what happens. I'm going to ask my OB what she thinks when I see her tomorrow.

  • I plan on doing the same when I see mine on Monday. I want to get on a med that will be safe for baby and that I can take on a daily basis. Constipation during pregnancy isn't fun so I am interested to see how this one will go since I don't have my GB.

I had mine out six years ago, shortly after having DS. I'm now diagnosed with IBS. I'm going to ask the OB about Immodium when I see her. Everything says it is safe but I'd rather ask. I'm pretty sure Colace is safe as a pregnancy stool softener.
  • Colace is definitely a safe stool softener during pregnancy. You can take it daily.

  • I had mine out when my second child was 3 months old. That was just over 2 years ago. I had to be really careful about what I ate for the first 6 months but now I'm pretty back to normal. I have been a little less regular but I think that's the pregnancy, not gallbladder. I've taken a stool softener a few times to stay on top of it. I haven't eaten anything too fried or fatty for a few weeks since I'm so nauseous.

  • I had mine removed in '04, my dd was born in '08. I had no problems. In fact when the surgery was done I asked if I had to stay away from certain foods, the doctor told me no, it doesn't affect any diet changes. I've had no issues since.

  • I had my gall bladder removed, since I run to the bathroom everytime I eat, but when I was pregnant the first time, it helped calm my stomach down and I would only go normally instead of urgently all the time
