Trying to Get Pregnant

Provera to jump start period?

I am ttc my first and have been on birth control for 13 years. I stopped taking the pill but still have not had a period now for 2 months and my doctor suggested using provera to start my period if it didn't start soon. I wanted to try to let it work it self out but since its now at 2 months I am not sure if it would be best to get things going with the pill. I know this makes you have a withdrawal bleed but it is safe to start ttc once you have had your period? From what I have read online this medicine is very dangerous to take while pregnant so my only concern would be if it is still in your system? Any experience with this and did it help get your cycle back on track?

Thanks!

Well Provera causes you to have a period.  You only take it for 5-10 days then stop (it's not something you continue).  It's used frequently in the fertility world.  It's only taken after confirmation of no pregnancy.

  • Pro era si commonly prescribed to women who have gone 60+ days without a period. A pregnancy test is done first to confirm the reason for not having a period is not pregnancy. It will jumpstart your period and be "out" of your system before you ovulate on your next cycle.
  • No, it's totally safe to take. I've taken it many times previously to essentially re-start my cycle.

    And don't use Dr. Google.

    And are you temping?

  • It would be safe, if you were to conceive the Medication bwould be out of your system by then. I would read taking charge of your fertility by Toni Weschler. If you begin charting after the provera you may be able to trouble shoot your cycles or find out why you are going so long without a period.
  • Provera is fine to take. I'm in the same situation (9 weeks no period after IUD) and my doctor perscribed Prometrium-- which is also progesterone, but I guess a more natural form. This is the medication that is given to women who are already pregnant who are low in progesterone. Maybe you can discuss with your doctor if that's an option you can take if it would make you more comfortable. Good luck!
