9 week scan

how likely are they to be able to tell you whether you're low risk/not at risk of miscarriage at a 9 week scan? Is it still too early and they still have to wait till 12 weeks?

I'm 9 weeks tomorrow and have a scan on Thursday. I've had Mmc before and as you can imagine just very anxious.

From my reading, once they find a heartbeat that's strong and in the 'right' beats per minute range for fetus age, your risk of miscarriage is really low. It's never nothing, but I keep telling myself I've got a 99% chance of not miscarrying since hearing mines little beat going. I think its a bit of a myth that 12 weeks is the 'magic' time when miscarriage rates drop, and is more of a hold over from before earlier scans existed. Hope it helps you feel better, I was super anxious about the same thing until hearing it for the first time yesterday.

  • Agree with @enkb.  I have getting ultrasounds since 4 weeks at my fertility clinic, and my last scan (at 8 weeks) which measured heart rate put me in the less than 1% risk category they said.  I agree that the 12 weeks is an inaccurate/outdated benchmark.
