non stress test?

has anyone had any expierence with this? today I went in because I wasn't feeling my son move. he had the monitors hooked up and his heartrate spiked and lowered fine but he still wasn't moving . They made me do a biophysical profile and he passed in 25min out of the 30min they allowed. I have been asked to come back tomorrow for another non stress test due to him not moving during the first test. I wasn't really given a good or bad answer so I'm just curious if anyone else has been through this ?

Re: non stress test?

  • I do non stress tests twice a week. But that is because I'm having twins. I haven't had to do the biophysical part though. My twins are very active it seems. I hope everything turns out ok for you and just relax. I'm sure he's fine just really restricted in space maybe. Good luck!

  • Yup. Same thing here, our baby is IUGR and I also have diabetes and asthma so they monitor her movement and stuff. I went in twice a week as well.
  • I do both NST and BPP on a weekly basis. Sometimes baby's just being lazy. How long were you hooked up to the NST machine? If it was less than an hour (which it usually is) I wouldn't worry so much. If you hadn't passed the BPP, then it would really be time to worry and they would not be letting you go home. Chances are that everything is fine, but your little one was just sleeping during the NST. Before your next one, eat a popsicle or drink a glass of OJ or something to wake him up.

    Good luck!

  • @kyrenora I had eaten and drank a soda (not the best choice but all I had) before I went & was hooked up for an hour .

Hopefully it will be better tomorrow. At the place where I go, they actually let me have a popsicle during the test, or they'll give me ice water. That always gets my girl moving.

  • I have had 10 of them due to GD. I have another 2 this week. Sometimes she sleeps and sometimes shes a peach. Try not to worry ... its tough but if anything they are kind of a blessing because you get to hear the heartbeat that much more. I actually feel like friends with some of the techs. Lol.
  • Thankyou ladies for reassuring me that I have no reason to worry ! Hopefully he's cooperative tomorrow [-O<
  • I have had to do NST every week since 30 weeks. I have found that if I eat too close to the appointment time that he doesn't move as much so I would eat about an hour before. The last time I did the test, I turned on my side and he moved a lot more. Hopefully your little one is cooperative tomorrow!
  • I have to do an NST every week until I deliver because of my "advanced age".
The first week he wasn't too active, so I decided to have a few cookies before my last appointment. He was bouncing all over the place for that test, but the cookies made the sugar levels in my urine test very high.
I'm gonna have an apple and orange juice next time. Those always get my baby moving.
  • I usually have the NST test twice a week also and if the baby isn't moving they say they wake the baby up by using a rattle toy and ofcourse they have iced cold water and Popsicles to help as well .. They did mention as the weeks go on its less likely for baby to move or move a lot because their just less space in there for him/her. Hope everything turns out ok good luck!

Advanced age & chronic hypertension here has resulted in having to have 'em from wk 32 give or take w/ all pregnancies
  • I go every week for a NST . My recommendation is def eat and or drink before going. Baby will be most active.

I go twice a week since two weeks ago and until I deliver because of smaller baby, baby is growing fine but I have to continue. When I go the nurse always has water with ice chips, drinking it while hooked up to the monitors helps the baby move, its something to do with noise that makes the baby move. Bring your own if they don't offer it.

What is considered "advanced" age? I've thought of myself as an older FTM at 36. But, my dr hasn't had me do an NST at all.
  • I thought 35 was considered AMA. I'm 36 and I go once a week for NST and fluid check. I felt like it's a huge waste of time at first but now I like to go and have 20 min a week to listen to her heart beat and feel her move around. I have a 3 yr old and not many moments like this.
  • I do an NST and BPP once a week since 31 weeks because of gestational hypertension. If you passed the BPP then I wouldn't worry too much. They check for movement, blood flow, fluid, and practice breathing. If you passed, then baby is just fine. Mine likes to nap during mine so it takes a lot of poking and prodding to get her going.
  • I had them with my second due to non movement. After 3 days in a row of non movement they ended up inducing me. But I was 38 1/2 weeks pregnant. He ended up being 9 lbs 1 oz and that's why he wasn't moving.
