Failed to Dilate with baby #1...what are you doing with #2?

Did anyone else fail to dilate with their first child?

Did/are you having a VBAC or Elective with #2?

I didn't progress past 3cm in 24hours and ended up with an emergency c-section. Would love to try VBAC but unsure of the likeness of failing to dilate again...

  • Best to talk with your doctor about whether you're a candidate for vbac. There are a couple of active threads on the board re: vbac and ercs that you can join in on too.

  • I'm with you! I dilated 1 cm every 3 hours. However, due to my impatience, they induced me at 40w1d so I just think my baby wasn't ready. I refuse to schedule a c-section until I have several Dr's recommendations against VBAC. I know I'm capable of it. Knowing what I know now, I'm willing to wait until atleast a week after due date so I know my baby & body is ready for birth. I guess it just depends on each persons situation.
  • I was 10 days over with the first and went into natural labour but had already been dilated 2cm for a few weeks so only really dilated 1cm during the whole labour.

@StephPegasus, thanks for the info, I will discuss it with my doctor but was hoping to hear from others who have had the same situation previously. Am interested in if it reoccurred etc.

    Thanks :)
  • I was 1cm from the time my water broke until 12 hours later. Only progressed to 3cm after 16 hours. They made me get an epidural and advised if that didn't progress things, I'd end up with an emergency c-section. Thankfully I was wheeled into the delivery room at 0300 (19hrs later) and delivered vaginally in 24 minutes.
Prior to this thread I'd never actually thought of the likelihood of that happening again ... I hope I progress naturally and more quickly this go round!
  • I was induced just prior to 42w. I dilated to 10cm in about 9-10 hours, but DS never descended past 2+ station (5+ is crowning) after over3 hours of pushing. So I ended up with a c/s due to arrest of descent. I will be trying for a vbac this time. My current OB is very supportive.
    BFP #1 - EDD 4/18/13 | DS born 5/1/13. 9 lbs. 14 oz., 22 inches long.

    BFP #2 - EDD 1/25/16
  • @Tahls84 sorry if that came across as brusque. Other ladies here may have certainly had the same issue but since every body and every pregnancy is different, you could still have a different outcome from someone here who had the same thing happen 1st time. That's the lovely thing about pregnancy and birth :)
Good luck whichever choice you make.
  • I was induced at 36 weeks and, in 24 hours, didn't make it past 5cm dilated. I'm hoping for a Vbac. Planning to discuss it with my OB at the 11 week appointment. My first appointment at 7 weeks was just for the ultrasound and to get my medical history and ancestry filled in with a nurse.
  • Every pregnacy is different so don't think just because you had a bad/hard or failure to progress birth the last time you will this time. I would suggest reading everything you can about natural birth, find a doc who is truly supportive of your vbac, just because he says we will letbyou try does NOT mean he will support your decisiion in eveey way possible, ask other moms in your area for.opinions about drs and join Ican and attend some of their meetings. Some great books are the thinking woman's guide to better birth, ina mays guide to childbirth, natural birth in the hospital, childbirth without fear and Dr sear's baby book. Stay far far away from the what to expect books.
Another thing is the dilating a cm an hour is not the norm just because you are in labor for 10 or 12 hours and aren't where the doc says you should be does Not mean you are not progressing babies are born on their schedule and if that doesn't fit with the doc's hr doesn't have the right to cut you open so he can make it home for dinner.
I wish all you mom hoping for a vbac the best.
  • @StephPegasus that's ok :)

I've tried googling to see if there is a possibility of it reoccurring but couldn't really find any helpful articles.

I definitely want to try for a VBAC and will just do up a birth plan to say if it looks like it's happening again to do the c-section earlier.
