Anyone with UC or other IBS?

i had a giant UC flare for the majority of my twin pregnancy and was diagnosed about 2 months after my girls were born, about a year ago. I'm 12 weeks tomorrow and starting to flare. I'm taking VSL#3 and tripled my dose. I don't want to take meds while pregnant so I'm hoping this works.

Anyone else dealing with this? How do you manage it?

    Ulcerative colitis?
  • Yes it's ulcerative colitis. I have Crohns and my Dr was very helpful even before we conceived on explaining which medications would be ok. I remained on my slow release anti inflammatory. He emphasized that the risks of not taking anything and flaring too much were much higher than risks from the meds. So as much as I hate it I'm continuing on with them. Keep in mind you can't take prednisone and a few others. I hope your flares subside!

Thanks. I haven't even seen a doctor since I was diagnosed. I asked my doctor about trying VSL#3 and he said he didn't think it would work but if it did to go for it. It kept me symptom free (as long as I don't go crazy with bread) for the last year. I moved out of state shortly after the diagnosis and haven't got a gastroenterologist here. If this doesn't go away by this afternoon I'll get a referral.

I didn't take meds during my last pregnancy because I didn't know what was wrong. I thought it was just food sensitivities or my guts being squished (my friend had a lot of pain during her twin pregnancy because he guts ran out of room. We're both very petite.) I took a medicated enema after my diagnosis because it was the most compatible med with breastfeeding, but the vsl#3 has actually given me much better results. I just don't know if it'll be enough to knock down a flare up.
  • I had UC with my first pregnancy and flared bad enough to finish the last 10 weeks on prednisone. My son is totally healthy and almost 7. This time around I have a jpouch so we are just looking out for an issues. Good luck! Flaring is never fun.

I think I may have knocked it out with a ton of my probiotics. I'm also eliminating all bread from my diet since that seems to aggravated my UC.

Thanks ladies so much for the support. Good luck to you!

My sister has a j pouch and has a 3.5 month old baby girl. Her Drs had her do a Csec to avoid any damage to the pouch that could be brought on by the stress of labor. She still had a couple flare ups during her pregnancy but said in general her body responded well to everything.
Wishing you all h&h pregnancies. I know how hard that can be.
