Cervix Question?

So, i know this isn't really something that can be answered for a guarantee i don't think but i was wondering...
If you have a longer cervix does that mean that it will take longer for you to dialate? My doctor told me the average and what the expect to se is about 25 and I'm at 36. I was just curious as to if anyone had any knowledge with this? Personal experience? how long was your labor if you did experience this? Thanks in advance and sorry for the weird question lol.

Re: Cervix Question?

  • Hmm I'm more familiar with it being anywhere from 3.0-4.5 cms ranging by how many weeks you are. As you get closer to your due date, it'll slowly measure less and less, and it'll efface as well. I wouldn't say it'll take longer.. I had a "beautiful" cervix (the way the dr put it) last time around, and I had an 8.5 hour labor from start to finish and I was completely closed 2 days before I had my first !

  • Cervical length has almost nothing to do with labor time.
  • yea, Im not sure what measurements they were going by exactly but thats what the doctor showed me on the AS results print out. Its good to know that the length wont have an impact on how long it will take.
  • I had a regular length cervix and didn't dilate, even after 17 hours of induction. I'd say length has nothing to do with it.

  • The dr was likely measuring in mm, a normal cervix is generally 3.0 - 4.5 cm (30 - 45 mm). I was told 2.5 cm (25mm) is considered the minimum you want to see as anything shorter than that can be an indicator of possible preterm labor. I'm a high risk case with a shortened cervix and history of preterm labor. Once mine went below 2.5 cm my drs recommended I get a cerclage, which I ultimately got, due to my history.

  • I don't think the length of your cervix should affect how long your labour is. My labour was 15 and a half hours
