Intense right side/back pain

Yesterday as I was getting out of the shower, out of nowhere I got a throbbing pain on the right side of my back, wrapping around my side. I thought maybe I just pulled a muscle. The pain was unbearable, to the point where I could only gain relief by leaning over the bed or sitting up in a hard chair. Laying down was excruciating, the times I tried to lay on my back or right side I would feel nauseous and vomit. After a few hours I was able to get up and back in the shower, I ran hot water over the areas and came out feeling 100% better. Extra strength Tylenol seems to help too. Well, this morning it happened all over again. I could only sleep on my left side. When I got uncomfortable and switched to the right, I felt horrible pain and nausea. Right now I'm sitting upright and trying to get a hold of the doctor.

Has anyone experienced something like this? Is it related to pressure on the vena cava? I'm not feeling dizziness. Fiancée thinks it might be a kidney stone, but I'm not having any issues or blood when urinating. Or maybe I did just pull a muscle? Just throwing this out there... Thanks.

Re: Intense right side/back pain

  • When I read the title of the post, I thought kidneys right away. You mentioned that you already considered whether it's a pulled muscle or not, and by the sounds of it, the recurring issue doesn't sound like only a pulled muscle. I've had an intense pain in my left abdomen when I lay in a certain position, but it doesn't start in my back. It's more localized to my side and abdomen, and a quick switch of position eases the discomfort. Part of me doesn't know if the Extra Strength Tylenol would ease kidney pain to the degree you described, so I'm a little stumped, too! If you can't get a hold of your clinic today and the problem persists, I'd consider going to an urgent care facility. Granted, if the pain can be managed, you might be better off managing the pain yourself until you can get in to see your OB on Monday rather than exposing yourself to the germs that walk into an urgent care on a Sunday! I hope you figure it out soon!

  • Depending on the exact location, it could be kidneys or gallbladder? I've been having some pain on the right side wrapping all around and figured out it was my gallbladder. I started taking a supplement through standard process and it's improved a ton! Does it get worse after you eat, especially if you have anything fatty? Gallbladder issues while pregnant are common due to the hormones slowing everything down. I would contact your OB and be sure to drink lots of water. Hope you feel better!!
  • This sounds like a good reason to swing by the ER!
  • I've been having VERYsimilar pain except I am most uncomfortable when I sit down. I've already had my gallbladder removed but this pain is making me miserable. I'm 25 weeks and don't know how I will make it to 40 like this. I have an appointment with my OB in the morning. We'll see what he says!
  • I pulled a muscle on my left side vomiting and that's kinda how it feels. But there are some organs (appendix) on your right side worth checking out.
  • The OB thought it was a pulled muscle and the vomiting/nausea was due to pressure on the vena cava. At the moment I'm carrying mostly toward my back (belly is not that big), which is probably why so much back pain. Her consensus for most things is, if it is non-recurring, it is most likely not a serious problem. If the pain returns though, I need to tell her so that we can do more tests.
  • I had severe pain on my right side that went to my back. It stayed for two days then completely disappeared. I couldn't sit up by myself or lay down. I was crying a lot, not hungry but no vomiting. The OB thought it was a pulled muscle or round ligament pain. The only relief I got was from sitting in a warm bath. But it went away and I was so grateful it did!
  • With my first I had severe hydronephrosis at 27weeks. The pain and symptoms your are experiencing is what I had. I'm glad your pain has stopped! Mine didn't and I couldn't handle it and ended up in er for five days.
