Flight thoughts and need advice!

I'll try to keep this short. My mom had pre-eclampsia and I'm frightened that I will develop it but I'm only 24 weeks and no signs as of yet. I'm taking a total of 4 flights in the next two weeks (three for work and one for our Babymoon) so I'll have a 5 hour flight on Monday, 1 hour flight Wednesday and another 5 hour flight on Friday. Then I will be taking a 6 hour flight the following Monday. My doctor isn't concerned about the travel because I've been healthy and show no signs of issues. BUT I also just got over a 3 week long bronchitis infection and I'm just a bit worried. I guess I'm reaching out to hear any thoughts or advice you moms have who have traveled a lot during pregnancy or who have experienced something similar to what I'm dealing with. I just want to keep myself and the baby healthy!

Re: Flight thoughts and need advice!

  • I had a similar schedule last month. Buy some compression socks (if only for piece of mind) and get up and move roughly every hour. I hated being "that girl" getting up so often but at the same time it made me feel better to be doing something proactive. Otherwise I just tried to sit tight and stay extra hydrated. Good luck!

  • Do a ton of ankle pumps and walk around the plane every hour as allowed. Decreases your risk of blood clots or just swelling. Drink water too
  • I just got back from our babymoon. We flew out Wednesday and back yesterday. I had asked my doctor about compression socks since everyone here always mentions them. She told me it's not something they recommend but that if I wanted to do it then go ahead. She told me for a healthy pregnant woman who has had no issues thus far that my chance of getting a blood clot was only a hair more than the average persons. She just said stay hydrated and move around once an hour.

I stayed hydrated and only got up once during each flight. Lol. I just made sure to keep my legs uncrossed too. I had ADHD so I generally fidget and move around a lot so I was still moving/bouncing my legs and feet often .
  • I flew from California to Spain (and back) at the end of my first trimester and was fine. My doctor reccomended I wear compression socks and drink A LOT of water which meant I had to get up every hour to use the restroom and walk a little. I wouldn't worry about it :)
  • I liked wearing compression socks on plane trips even before I was pregnant. I fly to and from places 3-4 times per year and while pregnant I will fly 5 times (each time a there and back). The compression socks help with swelling and fatigue in your legs, as well as the blood clots. I drink lots of water and bring snacks. Plane rides less than 3 hours at a time don't usually offer more than the pretzels and peanuts. Get an aisle seat! Lol
  • I was traveling up to 7 months :) its all good..find a way to put your feet up in between flights...ur ankles may fet a smidge swollen
  • What everyone else said! I have been having high bp at my appointments but my doctor had no trouble with me flying. I flew 6 times in about 4 weeks (some 3 hour flights, mostly 5+ hours). I wore compression socks, sat in an aisle seat, and tried to get up enough (a few flights had a bit of turbulence, so I was stuck in my seat). I did have swelling, but not nearly as bad as I would have had if I didn't have the socks on.
  • Thanks everyone! One flight down and 3 more to go! I drank TONs of water and got up about 5 times during the flight. I also did calf pumps while sitting and didn't have any issues!
