Sun

I am by no means baking every day in sun. But my favorite time of the year is when I have that nice sun kissed look, is it ok to tan a little? Like in the sun not in a tanning bed. I'm currently sitting on my patio in the sun hanging with DH while he builds a baby gate for our deck and it came to mind.

Re: Sun

  • As someone who used to work in a tanning salon I don't recommend tanning to anyone, pregnant or not. Any change in the color of your skin is damage. Buy a good sunless tanning lotion. The gradual kind can give a sun kissed glow without making you orange.

However, if you do want a sun kissed glow from the sun I would be careful while pregnant. Many women experience sensitive skin during pregnancy and are more prone to sunburn.

  • Sounds amazing! I always feel better with some sun on me too :) ive been planting my garden and am loving my outside time... I say enjoy it!
  • Use sunscreen and avoid getting burned. I burned really bad with my last pregnancy and suffered from a high fever because of it. I've been using my sons baby sunscreen that is 70spf or something high like that this time around. I love sitting in the sun too.
  • Definitely don't let yourself burn. I work in a skin cancer surgery center and part of my job is processing she surgery photos. Oh my gosh will it change your view of the sun and your skin forever!!!
  • I sat in the sun for a grand 30 mins today and my shoulders and chest already got a bit pink. I hate California.

I sat on my deck, in the shade of a tree last weekend. For an hour, I burned like a lobster. Lol. I totally get you.

  • Preggo skin burns quickly! And if my legs are any warning, use sun tan lotion, not the sprays! (Honestly, how did I accomplish this?!) I'd wager you'll prob get a nice color this summer without sitting out to do it intentionally- but if you do, keep that SPF going, girl!
  • It probably depends on how your skin did before you were pregnant too. I laid out for a few hours the other day and was outside from 8am to maybe 30 minutes ago in the nice Georgia heat and I'm fine. I've gotten noticeably more brown but I've never burned before.
  • I live at the beach all summer with my LOs. We actually just got home from the beach and I did get a little sun. I apply and reapply sun screen the whole time I am there. I have always burned but I seem even more sensitive to the sun while pregnant! Even with all the spf going on me, I still have achieved some color. :)
  • I live in Hawaii and seriously I rarely burn. We went to the beach for the first time in awhile 2 weekends ago and I am thanking God that I used sunscreen on my face and shoulders because EVERYWHERE else burnt. My belly, thighs, feet, everything. Your skin is so much more sensitive when pregnant.
  • Definitely use a sun screen lotion! And I was just given some really good advice by a nurse friend to drink more water than I normally would, especially if I spend any time outside. Pregnancy is just a sensitive time, and being outside in the heat can make you dehydrated more easily than before pregnancy!
  • I love being in the sun. But just be a little more cautious. Pre pregnancy I'd burned less than 5 times in my life and just always tanned quickly. My skin is way more sensitive right now. Same with bug bites. Never had much of a problem before but now apparently I'm delicious and the bites are huge!
  • Vitamin D can make the world of difference, especially to emotional pregnant women, haha. Just REALLY watch it with the sun block... I'm talking SPF 90, baby. I thought I had put enough on and after only a couple hours ended up with skin poisoning and couldn't put weight on my leg for nearly a week. You just don't know how you're going to react since your body's going through all these different changes. Don't think of it as "tanning" because you may just get burned and frustrated since it tends to not work out like it used to. Just enjoy the sun :)
  • I've been putting on SPF 50 and staying hydrated. I feel like as long as I don't overdo it and know my limits, it's fine. I think you should be most concerned about overheating. Also - RE: the SPF. Good article in Consumer Reports this month (the magazine has the ratings, but the article gives you the overall gist). https://pressroom.consumerreports.org/pressroom/2015/05/my-entry.html
  • My husband is seriously fair skinned and he uses SPF 70+, which protects his Irish paleness pretty well. I don't burn near as easily and have used his just to be sure. No problems! My doctor said the sun and being in the water can be good to help relax, especially from back pain, as long as you're smart about your time outdoors.
  • I just got back from a week at the beach and oh I feel so much better with a tan! I used sunscreen (got a little burnt a couple days) but I tan well...gotta love Greek skin!
  • I have always tanned quickly and burned rarely, but I'm lobster red after a few hours under a tent on the beach this weekend. Pregnancy is a game changer!
  • @brooklynbroussard, You're crazy lady!!! Those 100 degree days, I could barely breathe!!

  • Oh yah we don't have a pool, and can't use water during the day. So we stay indoors mostly.
