Leg cramps

not sure if this is pregnancy related(I've never had it happen to me) but I woke up at 4am with the most painful charley horse in my left leg. I've tried massaging it and it's still painful and can barely walk on that leg. Any other soon to be mommas have this happen to them?! What did you do to help? Massaging it out hasn't been working. :(

Re: Leg cramps

  • Oh, it's totally pregnancy related! I get them every single morning! It helps me if I stand up as soon as they start happening. And exercising/stretching before bed should help too!

  • Yep, my doc said its due to excess fluids/ increase your water intake- it'll help. Good luck
  • Totally pregnancy related. I get them off and on too. Sucks! They are better after days I'm better hydrated and have stretched more but even then I still get them. Sorry :(

  • I've been noticing them too, you are not alone :-)
  • Yes I was told it was my sciatic nerve. I lay on my left side with a heating pad on my leg to get rid of it!! Hope that helps! Feel better!!
  • This just happened to me this morning. As soon as I got up and walked on it I felt better.

Check this out: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/pregnancy-week-by-week/expert-answers/leg-cramps-during-pregnancy/faq-20057766 The gist of the link from the Mayo Clinic: - stretch your calf muscles (yes, even before bed) - stay active - take a magnesium supplement (or eat magnesium-rich foods) - stay hydrated - choose proper footwear. It's really common in pregnancy, but that doesn't mean we can't do something about it to decrease the frequency! ETA: It's screwing up my layout when I post :(

  • Happens to me every night. I foam roll, stretch, exercise and I drink a gallon of water (pretty close to a gallon) every day. Nothing makes it go away except standing up when it happens. I've never weighed more than 115 in my life. I'm 133 with my son so far at 25 weeks so I think a large part of it is the weight I'm not used to hauling around.
  • Thanks ladies!!! My sciatic nerve has been horribly the past few weeks and all this extra weight is a big change for my body. Hopefully it doesn't happen much more. It was way too painful and kept me up all morning.
  • I struggled with the same thing! It was awful! Definitely up your water intake- that helps a lot. Also- you need to take a magnesium supplement- ever since I started taking mine, I haven't had any issues! I take a magnesium supplement from Plexus- the biocleanse and it has worked wonders! Definitely find one that works for you!
  • Yes about the magnesium supplement. So many benefits.
  • I also get bad Charley horses in the middle of the night. I wake up out of a dead sleep. My father in law told me one way to help get rid of them faster so whenever I get one I do his trick and it generally goes away pretty quick. While still laying down just try to point your toes towards your heart/body. It stretches out the calf and like I said, anytime it happens I point my toes towards my body and it's relieved almost immediately. Not sure if it works for everyone but worth a try!
  • Drink a ton of water...and also banana the potassium helps ;-) mine just started with this pregnancy but I would get them terribly with my first
