Transition to toddler bed

How do you know its time for a toddler bed versus the crib? My son is a great sleeper but has started refusing his crib for naps and throwing fits at bedtime. Not trying to climb out yet, just seems to be developing an aversion to it.

With DD I transitioned her to a bed when I decided to PT her at 26 months. She never climbed out of the crib or even attempted and the transition was a piece of cake. DS climbed out of the crib at 19 months so we had no choice but to move him and it's been a nightmare. He will not stay in bed. I read somewhere that if you move them before they climb out then they may not realize they can get out of the bed either. It was true for DD. She didn't get out of her bed on her own for the first 10 months but that may just be her personality.
