Are your two year olds counting yet? I feel like my kiddo is behind!

I have a friend whose kiddo is already counting to 10. He can't count items, just does rote counting, but I am feeling a little bit of mommy guilt here. My kiddo receives speech-therapy services, and I am worried that she is already really academically behind, because she isn't counting yet.

  • My daughter was 2 in March and counts out loud to 3 and can count 3 items..sometimes it sounds like she knows more numbers, but I'd say counting to 3 is where she is at this point. Do you try and count with him? Your little guy will be counting to 10 before you know, I'm sure! Don't feel guilty, every kid is different and excel at different things at different paces.

  • My kid is almost 3 and counts like this: "tee, tee, tee!" and holds up 5 fingers no matter how many things you are asking about. I actually think it's really cute, not worrisome.

  • I wouldn't worry too much.  Is she in daycare/pre-school?  That is the only reason my daughter was counting to 10 at 2. I wasn't teahing her :) I think all kids are different...especially at this young age.

  • She's not in daycare. The only sitter I have left her with is my mom.

Kids learn at different rates and speeds regardless of whether or not they are in daycare or stay at home with family. At 2 years old, kids should be learning from play, books and the people around them teaching things throughout the day. If you are concerned, ask your Pedi or the therapist but try not to compare your kid to others.

My 3 year old is freak though and he knew the alphabet (not even in order, but recognized all the letters individually) plus he could count to 10 by the time he was 2 1/2. Pretty sure that's not normal!

  • I would try not to worry since kids learn at different times, however, you should be reading and pointing things out to your child on a daily basis. I work full time as well, but in the evening we always read some books. Can your mom maybe take her to the Library? Maybe visit story time there? My babysitter takes all the kids to Story time 1-2 times a week.
My daughter has been counting since before she turned 2. She can count to 17. But she does attend daycare and my babysitter's daughter is in preschool and she comes back and plays "school" with all the babies. She also knows the alphabet since before she was 2. We are working on colors now. I also come from a family of educators and work for the school district so I do put an emphasis on learning something new each day. There are tons of ways to make it fun and interesting.
  • My 2 1/2 year old can count to like 15. However his alphabet stinks! He used to kind of simg the ABC song but now I can't get him to. He. An name every type of construction equipment though....
  • I wouldn't worry. My two year old can recite numbers and calls it "counting" but she doesn't really know what she's doing (she never stops counting when she's "counted" the objects, just keeps on reciting higher numbers). At this point I think it's just something cute to enjoy.

Good point. A lot of kids memorize the alphabet song but they don't really know the alphabet and some kids know numbers but not what they actually mean.

  • My son is 2 and has started counting, singing and can recognize ABC ...alphabet has been a little hard for him but I'm not stressing. I wouldn't stress on your little one either.

  • Mine will be 3 tomorrow.  They started counting at 2 and half and do go to daycare.  Right now my son can count to 13 and recognize numbers up to 10.  He likes to tell me what aisle number we are in at the stores.  Both can also count objects up to 10.  My son can also count to 5 correctly on his fingers.
They know the alphabet but only recognize maybe 3-4 letters.  A and O are definites.  B and C sometimes.
They both also know their colors.  Red, yellow, blue, pink, orange, purple, brown, black, white, and green.
I work with them at home a bunch too.
