Re: heartburn

  • I have GERD and am used to taking meds that you aren't supposed to take when pregnant. I feel your pain sister. I take extra strength Zantac twice a day and I still have heart burn on the reg. :((

  • My husband went out and got me Maalox two nights ago because mine was so bad! It worked way better than Tums!! Mine was from eating red sauce! I'm avoiding it like the plague now.

Hope that works for you, as a pharmacy technician I hear pharmacist say to patients that it does take some time to work. Good luck!

I will have to give Maalox a shot! Thanks. Heartburn was so bad the other night I thought I was going to be sick @-)

  • I have GERD as well. My OB has been prescribing protonix for me and it's amazing. It's the only thing I've tried that helps all the way down, if that makes any sense.
  • I'm right there with you!! It's been so bad it's made me sick, on Zantac morning and night :(
  • I had terrible heartburn during my last pregnancy..it didn't seem to matter what I ate. Tums did nothing for it but Gaviscon helped a lot. Good luck!
  • Thank you ladies! I will be trying out your over the counter options, and if those don't help I'll ask my doctor at my next appointment for something that's prescription strength! :)

  • With my first pregnancy I had terrible heartburn and I didn't want to take any medication so I would drink water with some baking soda in it. It was gross, but it worked!!! This time I have figured out that if I feel heartburn starting I take a probiotic pill. Dr said it is ok to take. It seems to help a lot and is a natural way to get rid of it. Plus it helps with one of the other symptoms, constipation! Two in one!
  • Never heard of drinking water with baking soda, sounds gross ;))
I've also noticed that my heartburn is worse at night :-/

  • Me! Terrible and worse at night too!
  • My doctor gave me Pepcid AC dis the trick within minutes for my indigestion too. Nexium was soooo expensive but the Pepcid was covered by my insurance..I called my doctor and he sent the prescription right over to my pharmacist (well him or his nurse) I was Super grateful because it was so bad combined with my nausea and fatigue Eeeekkk!
  • Oh it is! But is works!
  • Mine has been terrible, but Alka Seltzer makes these little fruit chew tablets that are AWESOME! I hate how tums are so chalky and gross- these taste like candy!
  • I have GERD which is aggravated by everything including water right now. I like to suffer I guess because I've never tried anything but I'm keeping a list of things you all mentioned because it's getting worse by the day.
  • My SO takes a bit of apple cider vinegar (the good organic kind with the mother) for heart burn and swears one dose lasts for weeks. Thankfully, mine has never been bad enough for me to try it, but it's safe and he says it works. You can mix it with some warm water and honey.

Ugh so chalky, even the fruit flavored ones taste nasty! I will have to look for the Alka Seltzer ones :)

The thought of apple cider vinegar makes me want to gag! Good to know it works ;)

  • I had bad GERD before I got pregnant and some things that can really help is not eating 2 hours before bed and sleeping propped up. If it gets really bad there are some prescription antacid that can be used while pregnant according to my Dr.
  • I don't mean to bump my own thread, but I wanted to say that Pepcid Complete berry chewable tablets are amazing!  You only have to take one at a time, and a second if needed :)

  • Thanks for the tips everyone! I will have to try the pepcid complete. So far I have been just using tums but the heartburn has been so bad sometimes that it makes me sick. Apples and cereal seem to help me. Everyone tells me to try pickles or apple cider vinegar but the idea of them makes me sick!

My OB told me yesterday that taking too many Tums isn't good either, so she recommended the Pepcid :)

  • I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this or not. I think I'm having acid problems, but not sure. I have a very sore throat, it hurts worse when swallowing. I also have a feeling like there's a bunch of saliva in the back of my throat. I wonder if it's saliva, sinus drainage, or acid? I don't know how to tell... but I wish I could figure it out so I could fix it! Can acid cause sore throat? Oh, and I've had a bad dry cough, too. I don't really have a heartburn feeling though, not in my chest or my throat. I don't know what's wrong with me but it is very aggravating. I wanted to ask on here before calling the dr. Any suggestions?
  • Acid reflux can cause a sore throat and a dry cough, have you tried taking anything? I would suggest Tums or Pepcid (famotidine).  If that doesn't help then I would call the doctor in the morning.  I read that you can have an increase of saliva while pregnant because of pregnancy hormones.  Hope you feel better!

My dentist told me this as well. He said it's not uncommon to see women come in after pregnancy with tons of cavities due to all the tums they're popping. All that sugar is no good.

  • Someone I work with recommended ginger for heartburn(also an appetite suppressant), I purchase some ginger from the bulk barn(haven't had heartburn since I purchased it but will share if it works).
  • Cup of milk helps
