Existing Genetic Disorders to be Tested?

I know there have been several threads about whether or not people will choose genetic testing for abnormalities, downs, etc. But my question is a little different.

SO has a rare blood disorder, from which he almost died at birth and had regular blood transfusions until he was 3. Also had a splenectomy at age 20, and still goes through low hemoglobin levels about once a month (he calls it his period... Lol)

We've been referred to a risk OB who will do another sono at 12 weeks and discuss testing options with us. TBH, I don't know how much I wanna know. I would never terminate for downs or something like that, but having something that is necessary for baby's health is a totally different beast.

So my question is... Any of you have exisiting things youd be willing to share that you'll be testing for? Or any experienced moms who got information that latee you decided you didn't really want?

  • My DH has a genetic liver condition. I spoke with the geneticist yesterday. We will be doing further investigation and possible testing.

  • I don't but a good friend of mine has. Her hubby has a cancer gene and they found that he passed it to his daughter. So they were prepared with specialists for her genetic condition, starts with an L, and not running around after the birth looking for them. It was more planned and she said she wouldn't do it any other way. Good luck with whatever you decide.

  • My cousin was born with spina bifida. They're almost 100% sure that it is because my aunt was low in folic acid during her pregnancy, but to be safe, my parents and grandma had me go on prenatals the day we got married and I've been on them for 4 years straight since then as a precaution. I'm going to go in for testing on SB since it can be genetic. It's scary, but I think I'd rather be prepared ahead of time.
