Coming up early... bad test results for T21 and T18

Cross posting from the High Risk Board

Just got home from our OB where we found out that our odds for T21 are 1 in 10 and our odds for T18 are 1 in 10, results from our Nuchal (sp) scan and bloodwork. I am so worried about little one. We did the Verify bloodwork right away, the one where they can test the fetal DNA from the mothers blood and should have results in a week. My son and daughter did not have any health concerns so this is a new road for me. I was gslitwiller on here with my son 4 1/2 and daughter 2 1/2 but couldn't get into my old account. If anyone has been through this has any tips or research I should look at I have no idea what I am doing other than waiting a week for more specific results and worrying.

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. I have no advice that will be helpful. 1 in 10 odds are obviously much higher than average, but the "odds" are still in your favor. Hoping that next week you get nothing but positive news.

What she said. Mathematically 1/10 is only 10% likelihood. You are 90% likely to deliver a child with none of these concerns.

And don't worry about your child unless one of these chromosomal abnormalities causes the child physical pain. I get why you'd be worried and have a lot to think about but children with these sorts of issues will live happy and fulfilling lives with a loving family behind them. In the unlikely chance it happens.
  • Trisomy 18 is almost always fatal and if the baby does make it to term, only 1% of those children make it to age 10.  I would definitely do some research to prepare yourself if the news is bad from the DNA test.  Perhaps consider amnio which would be definitive as opposed to these tests that give you percentages.  I hope that the DNA test shows you are at low risk, so you can feel better as these test are much more sensitive and accurate compared to the nuchal scans.  Good luck!!!!
  • Yea this is just a risk assessment right now. Until you have actually possibility instead of probability I would try to be positive! And yes prob get more tests that will be more definitive. Good luck.
  • I had a baby with T18 about 10 years ago.  Please consider amniocentisis.  It's a simple test for piece of mind.  Just to let you know, I've had 2 healthy babies since my Jacob had the chromosomal anamoly.  I know this is scary.  I've been there with an ending that was not great.  BUT going into the amniocentisis the doctor told us that the blood work only shows percentages and not definite results.  AND I have known a few women who have had the increased percentages to the bloodwork tests but the amniocentisis confirmed that there were no issues.
  • Sorry you are gong through this.  I had odds of 1:10000 for T21.  I had a baby with T21.  Odds don't mean anything and to me they are just wrong.  Hope you get good news.  Also if it does have T21 it really is no big deal.
  • Sorry to hear that. I hope everything turns out ok for you.
