Measuring Small - anyone else?

I had an ultrasound at 20 weeks and they weren't able to get all the images they needed so I had to go back yesterday. I am currently 24 weeks and have been on the smaller side all throughout my pregnancy so far. I am still within range but measuring a few days behind. I was a smaller baby myself and my doctor said that is probably part of the reason. I have to go back in 3 weeks to track the growth to make sure I stay within the normal range.

I know that I could be better with my diet, I haven't gained much weight yet and sometimes I don't think I eat enough. I'm on the smaller side to begin with and I have struggled with getting full VERY quickly so far throughout my pregnancy. My goal for the next 3 weeks is to really pay attention to my diet and bump up the protein and necessary vitamins. I know at this point it is mostly genetics but it can't hurt!

Is anyone else measuring small?

Re: Measuring Small - anyone else?

  • I am 23 weeks and I measured 20. My doc said its common for a lot of women to measure either 2 weeks over or two weeks under and since I'm so small, not to worry about it. However she said if it gets more than three weeks behind we'll need to schedule an ultrasound and take a look. I hate admitting this but I eat wayyy too much, and my baby is small..so I don't think it's anything that you've done.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one and I'm also glad to hear your doctor doesn't seem concerned! I am just hoping we are still within range when we go back in 3 weeks. :)

I believe baby was estimated at 11oz at my A/S too.  Nobody seemed concerned.  My last pregnancy, I measured small at a 32 week growth u/s, and after that I had to have weekly NSTs and BPPs, as they were concerned about IuGR.  I ended up being able to make it to my scheduled c/s date at 39 weeks, and he was 6lbs7oz when he was born.  He's always been at the 5-10th percentile since then, he's just a peanut!  I'm pretty small as well, it seems he takes after me.

  • MrsL32  Thanks for the response!! Makes me feel much better! We have been calling our baby peanut since we found out.. I just didn't expect him/her (team green) to be such a peanut!

  • I was told baby was 11 oz at my 20 week a/s but they didn't say anything else about percentile, measuring ahead/behind, etc. From reading other posts on here though it seems as though 11 oz. is on the smaller side. I'm 5'11 and my husband is a big guy so I expected baby to be on the big side, but who knows. I also haven't gained any weight (actually lost 20 pounds and recently gained 5 back) but that's due to still having daily morning sickness at 22 weeks.
  • My little guy measured 10oz at 19w, but the tech admitted that she didn't get the best pictures and that the weight measurement is an ESTIMATE. I'd say if the doc isn't concerned, don't worry. All babies are different and maybe ours will hit a growth spurt later.

I have a redo of my scan tomorrow, since the pics weren't acceptable, so we will see how much he has grown!
  • Good to hear these since I'm in same boat and have to go back in 4 weeks. A friend told me to drink ensure. I'm going to pick some up tonight, as I haven't been able to eat much meat i should try to get more protein.

Yes. I have had 3 x '20 week' scans now to 'recheck' the measurements over the past 6 weeks (one every two weeks) and the overall weight of our baby falls in the 8 percentile. As we are both 5'9 they are sending us for genetics testing at a specialist hospital in London! Our appointment is on Tuesday, having had our most recent scan this afternoon. YIKES..... this is scary
  • Ugh that is scary. I mean I don't get why being under the 10th percentile is scary to doctors though when someone has to be there right? Do they ever not gain enough wait to at least they can't be born and have alittle help if needed? How much has yours been gaining each week and what are you now weight and timing wise? Just looking to have something to compare to! Good luck! Keep us posted.
  • Our last baby was measuring small near the end and I technically had IuGR too.  Apparently she was in the 9th percentile near the end.  Well guess what - she's still in the 9th percentile and she's two!  I agree with christina4436 - someone has to be at each percentile and it doesn't mean there's a problem. I'm an average weight now but was a skinny kid.  My husband was a VERY thin kid and is still thin now.
