Baby Names

Stuck... Suggestions, Please?

The husband and I have yet to commit to a name for our daughter, expected to arrive early September. We have names we both really like, but we would ideally like to find a name that we both swoon over.

We have one other daughter, age 7, Scarlett Rose (named after my grandmother).

I would love and appreciate some suggestions, pretty please. My personal pros and cons list for girl names includes:

CONS - names people are trying to make unisex names when they are really just boy names, names ending in -son, most any name reminiscent of Addy/Addie, Maddy/Maddie, Abby, Gabby etc, and names that are only picked in order to shorten to a cutesy nickname. I certainly mean no offense, but I prefer a child's name be the intended name, with a nickname that just develops naturally.

PROS - legit name, legit spelling, names that are either a bit whimsical, regal, or romantic sounding, and for our daughter not to be first name + first letter of last name in every class due to popularity.

Here's the names we like or really like, but can't commit to because one really likes while the other one just likes:

Seraphina
Arwen
Lilou
Susan
Eleni
Juliet
Violet
Zelda
Thisbe
Octavia

Sorry to be so, well... picky and difficult. I appreciate any feedback and help! Thank you!

  • Thank you! I really want to use Zelda, which is my mother - in - law's name, but we are afraid we will hurt my mom's feelings by doing so.

Maybe middle name it? You have other lovely options as first names. I would suggest Octavia Zelda, but I don't like the double 'a' thing going on. Thisbe Zelda? Juliet Zelda?

  • I love Thisbe! I've only known one woman with that name, but it has always stuck with me. I've never seen in mentioned on here before. Seraphina is really pretty. Zelda is nice too.

It would probably seem too theme-y for a first name given your other daughter's first name, but I like Violet. Our girls' middle names are Scarlett and Violet and I love their names.
I like that they are both legit names and colors. It makes us want to find another name that fits that combo for our next one.
  • I like Juliet best, but I am not sure that I like both names ending so similarly.

What about Julianna? I think it fits your criteria.

  • How about Ophelia? I feel like that fits in with your list. Of your list I like Juliet the best. I would also add:

  • Name crush on Thisbe! I love Greek mythologie names, but most I'd never use in real life. This is one I can totally get behind though.

Zelda is great as well. In fact, most of you names are great, except Lilou which I think is too cutesie.

  • I like Juliet and Violet the best from your list, but neither really work with Scarlett. I think Genevieve is a nice suggestion. Scarlet and Genevieve are a lovely pair. Other suggestions: Julia, Hazel, Leila/Layla

Seraphina and Juliet are my top favourites.
  • The only ones I really like are Violet and Juliet but they do rhyme a little bit with Scarlett so I probably wouldn't use them.

I'm not a fan of Zelda at all. I think that's a tough name to pull off. Maybe Zara instead?

I really love the suggestion on Gwendolyn. I think it fits all of your criteria except people will probably call her Gwen at some point.
  • You have some great names. Love Violet, Hazel and Iris or Ivy but some may find it matchy with Scarlett Rose... Personally I don't find it a huge deal.

Will also throw in Eileen, Olive, Clementine, Calliope, Matilda

    Julia. Eloise. Elodie.
  • Laurel
Lorelei ( not sure of the proper spelling on that one!)
    Ophelia (Second that suggestion!)
    Beatrice
    Marguerite
Rosalind ( I don't care that your other daughters mn is Rose! I think this works!)
    Athena
    Claudia
    Katarina
    Carina
    Helene
    Maeve

  • I adore Octavia and I also really like Ophelia and Cordelia. Cornelia is cute but may be a little corney for some.

Violet is quite popular so how about Viola or Veronica?

Susannah/Susanna Audrey is one of my favorite combinations. So classic.

I don't like Zelda but I adore Zahra and Zola Evangeline.

Lenora Hazel may compliment Scarlett Rose
or perhaps Jillian Pearl, Lillian Pearl, Cynthia Pearl, Clara Pearl, or Sylvia Pearl.

Felicity, Wilhelmina (Willa), Joscelin, Helena, Guinevere, Gwendolyn, Nina, Diana, Éponine, Cosette, Simone, Bethany, and Rosaline are all either classic, whimsical, or literary. I hope that helps.
  • Some great suggestions by pp!

    Athena
    Anastasia
    Felicity
    Anthea
    Esme
    Ester
    Cassandra
    Bridget
