Lotrisone cream for itching

has anyone been prescribed lotrisone cream for vaginal itching during pregnancy? I called my dr office and asked what I could take over the counter and they prescribed this instead but I read that it's a category c drug and I am trying to avoid anything that is not a category a or b drug. I'm almost afraid to use it. I just want to know if anyone else used it with no issues

Re: Lotrisone cream for itching

  • Your doctor wrote you a prescription to help you with an issue and you're afraid to use it.  But asking strangers on the net to share the ancedotes will make it ok for you to use?  Does the doctor who wrote the prescription know you're pregnant?

  • Lotrisone is actually a combo product containing clotrimazole (antifungal) and betamethasone (corticosteroid). The combo product is in fact a category C, however clotrimazole topical cream is actually only a category B (the oral lozenge is a C). Additionally, there is very minimal to poor systemic absorption (into your body) after topical application of clotrimazole cream. As far as the betamethasone, it is a C. While seeing a category C is alarming to some, in this case, it indicates not that it will definitely hurt you or your baby, but that there are no controlled human studies relating to this drug. The C just serves as a "flag" of sorts to encourage discussion with your doctor or pharmacist. Colace is also a category C and doctors and pharmacists recommend it to pregnant women all the time. Currently, I take it every day and am not sweating it one bit. If you have concerns, certainly ask your pharmacist and they can contact your doctor if necessary. I hope this information has been helpful and I hope you are feeling better soon! :)

Maybe it's that I'm a FTM after trying for 13 years that has made me paranoid to take anything that is not listed as being safe to use during pregnancy. Yes it was my OB who prescribed it. I have stopped taking anything that is not a category a or b drug just bc you never know if something could happen. Even though my doctor said it was fine I still just wanted to know if anyone had used it in maybe previous pregnancies without any issues. Yes it makes me feel better to hear others experiences. Yes I am one of those women on here who would have been told by their dr that symptoms can come and go but still ask on here for others experiences to reassure myself that it's ok. I have always been a little paranoid about things and it's gotten worse since finding out that I'm pregnant. Just like a lot of other women on here they feel better after hearing that other have gone thru the same things they have. It's just for reassurance.

You got amazing information from Beverly.  Id refer to my/a doctor for prescription drug questions.  He/she gave you the best treatment for YOU.  Someone else's experience with a drug should not sway you to take/not take it.  Good luck.  I hope you get relief soon.
