fluid in babies kidneys...

Hi all, I'm just wondering if anyone else is going through this or has gone through this before. Unfortunately I was involved in a car accident yesterday, I'm 39 weeks tomorrow, and had an ultrasound done as I hadn't felt the baby move. Before I left the hospital I was told they had an accidental finding of the baby having fluids in her kidneys. i really got worried but was assured it wasn't from the accident. I was told by the nurse it is something common among babies about to be born. i followed up with my OB this morning and was told it was fine not to worry and just follow up at my next appointment. I am nervous because everyone seems to really be playing this down. I am a first time mom here and my mind is going off in so many directions...any advice would help.

  • No experience but glad you and LO are OK after your traffic collision, and wishing you well.

  • I was told at our 20 week ultrasound that my son had some fluid in his. Told it was common and not to worry. We got another U.S. At 26 ish weeks to recheck them. Said still a bit there and pediatrician would do an US on baby after he arrived. He was born on June 6 they did the US to check before we left the hospital because we would have had to go back there a couple of days later for the US for the pediatrician. Anyway, it showed that he is fine and they just recommended he get checked again in 3 months
  • DS had this as well and @Westypet is going through something similar. With DS, he was not clear 2 weeks after birth, so the recommendation was to monitor until it was resolved. Unless you have a family history of kidney disease, this is most likely what they will recommend.

We've had 3 ultrasounds so far but it hasn't resolved completely yet. DS is 2.5. Our ped didn't even bring it up at his last appt, so I need to. But we've had no issues, just a trip to radiology every 6-12 mo. Unless you have kidney disease in your family, I really wouldn't stress. Just make sure you bring it up with your pediatrician at the first appt so it doesn't go unmonitored.
  • Going through the same thing/similar situation as a FTM. It is scary, but the doc said it was very, very common and resolves itself.

With monitoring and being watchful, I am just trying to trust that my healthcare people know what they're doing and that he'll be okay.
  • It you're taking about mild renal pelvis dilation, that is quite common. If everything else has been progressing normally, they usually just do a follow up ultrasound after baby is born to make sure it resolves (which it usually does). Everyone is playing it down because it shouldn't be an issue to worry about as long as everything else is going well :)

What does "fluid in the kidneys" mean? (Having some fluid/urine should be a good thing, right?)
  • @kbbtah It's typically that the fluid backs up back into the kidney instead of draining into the bladder. There is a valve that is supposed to prevent that, but sometimes it just doesn't function quite right, and fluid travels the wrong way. At least that is how it was explained to me.

    Thanks @Sammy K

sorry to hear of your little one's struggles. Hoping everything continues to be monitored @1miraclebaby15 and that your baby will be here safe and sound soon. Keep us posted, please! :)
  • FTM here too. DS was found to have fluid in his rt kidney at 30 week uultrasound. Ob referred me to a MFM who did another level 2 scan. The specialist said its nothing scary..that baby wouldnt need to be whisked away to NICU over it. It just needs to be monitored. I am only 32 weeks now but have another ultrasound at 36w. If fluid is still there they will most likely have me meet with a pediatric urologist who will check baby after he is born. She said sometimes these things resolve themselves once baby is born too. They checked my fluid levels which were good and she said that was a sign the kidneys were doing good.
