When did you/plan to Tell work?

if you're currently employed when did you tell them or do you plan to?

I had to tell my manager because I needed time off for my appointment and u/s but not sure when I'll tell my co workers.

Mom of one adorable little boy and excited to do this again.

Re: When did you/plan to Tell work?

  • I haven't yet. We've been waiting until after our first appt (later this week) to start telling anyone.

I will probably tell my direct supervisor in the next few weeks or sooner if I start feeling worse and need to come in late

  • Well I'm in a pickle because I work for and with family. I love my job so much so I'm so nervous about missing any work. I plan on telling my family after we see the baby's heartbeat so that's when they'll find out haha
  • I told my boss since we are a small company and she went through a MC before she had her son so she understands what I'm going through. It's also a lot easier to ask her to randomly leave for appointments since she knows what is going on. She is super excited for me. I think I will do the co-worker announcement after the first tri if I can hold it in that long since I'm pretty close with some of the ladies I work with.

  • Last time, I told around 7 weeks because I had severe morning sickness. I work at a game company, so most of our employees are young and irresponsible and I didn't want my bosses to thing I was just coming to work hungover. It was after my dating U/S.

This time, I'm waiting until after my dating U/S for sure, but I may be up for a promotion, so I want to wait a little longer this time (since I have a kid at home, they definitely don't think I'm just out partying). I don't want it to get weird (because my team is super close), so probably in the next month.

  • I'm definitely waiting for an u/s with a heartbeat before I tell anyone but still worry if that's "too soon" but not sure how much I can hide my nausea. Bleh! But my one co workers parents are friendly with my Inlaws so once we tell them we may have to tell work anyway

  • I told my boss yesterday - but our company is her non-profit contribution (she also has a private practice), and she is also a my professional mentor and a mom. She was over the moon excited, talked to me about her own pregnancy, gave me a bunch of tips and resources, and also talked to me about next steps for my career. I'm so happy I told her sooner rather than later! I'm also extremely lucky to have the boss that I have!

  • I'm trying to wait a little longer, but I'll probably have to do it soon. I work at a vet school and already today I've had to duck a patient who's on a drug pregnant women aren't supposed to have contact with.

I waited until the second tri last time and plan to do that again. It would be nice to have an excuse for my fatigue and flakey-ness right now though!

I can't decide... I don't mind waiting, but I feel like I'm lying by omission and it's awkward for me. At some point, because of planning around client care (continuity of services) I will need to be conscientious about commitments and anticipating coverage needs. Ultimately these issues are going to be the responsibility of my superiors, so I don't want to seem like I'm screwing them/the agency by waiting too long and leaving everyone hanging when we could have prepared for the winter earlier.
ETA I think I made my decision by writing that out. I'm going to tell in the next week or so (6-7 weeks)... At least my direct supervisors.

I work on a very small team and I handle a lot of things no one else can do, so I get how you feel in some ways.

A big part of the reason I wanted to tell them as well is that I'd need to say something and take some time off if I had a MC. I have no idea if it's true, but I feel it would be easier to let them know I lost the baby rather than tell them I was pregnant and now I'm not. But I could be totally wrong.

Same for me. Except I don't think I will have a 12 week u/s... Hopefully we will get to hear the heartbeat at that point though! I will have to tell one friend/coworker before announcing at work. She had a MC last year and has been trying to get pregnant since. I don't want to shock/upset her by having her hear it the first day back to work...
  • I have told my boss at 5-6 weeks each pregnancy, but only because I'm an RN. She is the only person we tell until after hearing baby's heartbeat.

  • I had to tell a few people at work some normally I have to lift heavy items. Didn't plan on saying anything til after 1st appointment though.
  • I told my boss because of the morning sickness. I sit next to him in an open floor plan office and would have to run off a few times with some gross smells around the office. He's been through my last pregnancy with me and knew I was taking clomid so I'm comfortable with him knowing and he's great about keeping things confidential and helping me get out of obligations with clients where they would expect me to drink.

  • I told my Supervisor today, it just happened to work out well since we had mid year reviews. I will wait until after my 1st appt (10 wks) to say anything to my coworkers.

I work out of town so I think i'll be telling my supervisor within the next month so that maybe I can work from our in town office when i have doctors appointments.  i don't want to waste all my time off going to doctors appointments.  So probably before my next doctors appointment (end of July).

ETA: I don't know exactly how far along I am but i'm guessing i'll be around 11 weeks or so by then?

  • I currently work in a dental office and I have not told my boss. I am taking precautions with the radiation from the xrays. I have my first appt next week. I dont want to tell her... she isnt the most supportive and can be judgemental. Plus, she made me eat my damn banana outside!

  • I've already told my daycare parents (I'm an in home child care provider). I want them to be well aware of why I'm frequently using a backup for appointments and I want them to have PLENTY of time to find someone they trust to care for their littles during the 6 weeks of leave I'll be on once I have the baby.

  • My boss left recently, so I now report to a really-high-up guy who I've spoken to maybe twice in the 2 years I've been here... and he's not in my office, so I never see him. So, I'm definitely waiting until the 2nd tri, and even then, I might go through another woman who though she's not my boss, might give me a better idea of how I should tell him. It's a weird situation.

I'll probably tell one of my coworkers sooner, though. We're close and I don't want him to think I'm just being lazy with leaving early, etc.

I'll tell my assistant (and good friend) right around 12 weeks so she can try not to schedule things near my due date. I'll wait to tell my boss until it's physically apparent. During my last pregnancy I didn't tell anyone at work until I was wearing maternity clothes 100% of the time. It was kind of funny because people were starting to think I was just getting fat until I told them!
  • I told my supervisor today (I'm at 7 weeks) and he was so excited! I felt like he needed to know since I was taking a bathroom break every 20 minutes and my patience is at an all time low PLUS the million appointments I had coming up. I won't tell anyone else until I hear the heart beat in July though

  • My direct boss works in a different office. I'll see her July 9 so probably then cause it's in person. I know she suspects cause we traveled together last week and I didn't drink at any dinners, but she has the tact not to ask. It would have been really helpful for her to know during that trip but I hadn't been to the doctor yet. Also, like others say by then I'll be nearly 10 weeks and if something were to happen id want to take some time. Would be easier if she knows. I may also tell 1-2 close co-workers after that, but not going public at work until after first tri. I'm also in an odd situation because I took on a partial second role for the summer while another person is on maternity leave. Great timing given I'm now exhausted and nauseous with double the workload!

  • I'm freaking out because I haven't seen my boss yet today and I wore a maxi dress and also look visibly pregnant.
  • This might be a dumb question - but do you tell them informally or do you schedule time to sit down with them? My supervisor is the President of our company. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have time to have a sit down with me so I can tell him, and if he did I'd probably get a "I don't freaking care" stare from him. Do I make an appointment with HR? Totally new to this thing and have no idea!

@bfavors - I'd say it depends on your relationship with your supervisor.  I told my direct supervisor informally but my other boss, I'll probably wait until my weekly 1:1 later this week. I waited a bit longer to make an appointment with HR to discuss leave and what not (probably at 15 weeks). I had to sit down with HR again at about 30 weeks to get the paperwork and everything.

  • I will likely tell my supervisor informally/in passing when the time comes, then ask how he'd like me to go about discussing with HR. We are a small office of a large state-wide firm so I'll let the managing attorney in my office tell me how he wants me to address it with the home office.
  • Whelp, I just found out I'm likely getting a promotion this fall - so it looks like I'll be telling my other boss sooner rather than later.
