Staying active check-in!

Staying active in any way, shape, or form is important for many of us (as long as we haven't been advised not to), so we're checking in! What are you doing to stay active? Is your daily hustle and bustle keeping you on your toes and moving all the time? Do you do an activity like walking, running, swimming, etc. that you're finding comfortable still? Do you do Crossfit or lift weights still? Fill us in on how it's going as a pregnant woman who is working on staying active!

Re: Staying active check-in!

  • I try my best to go to the gym and do cardio and machines/weights at least 3 times a week. I try and go for walks on the days I don't go to the gym too :)

  • I pulled a muscle rowing over the weekend and now I'm out for 2 weeks at least. I should be able to swim starting next week. The pain was unbearable until this morning so I'm just grateful it's healing! My pelvis has also pulled out of place before the muscle (hence the rowing) so I'm not really allowed to walk long distances or do anything with high impact. I'm starting to feel like Crossfit and me being pregnant aren't a good idea!
  • I am still lifting weights (mostly free weights in my basement), doing the elliptical, swimming and doing prenatal yoga. I was walking but now that is causing cramping/round ligament pain so I will stick with the elliptical. I never felt quite as lame as the day I couldn't finish my walk on the treadmill because of my belly. The other thing that has gotten much harder lately is planks. I used to try to hold them for a minute but now I'm coming in and out for 10 seconds at a time. I can't wait to exercise again without this belly!
  • I was doing prenatal workout videos (via the app Power 20) last week and then I did A LOT of walking over the weekend.  I'm a bit exhausted this week and have late nights at work but will try to fit in more videos.  I do have a 10-15 minute walk each day to and from the subway though!  And stairs...so many stairs.

  • I am lifting weights 3-5 days a week, still doing squats and deadlifts.  With the nice weather, I've been bicycling with my 2 little ones in the Burley trailer.  At lunch I fit in a city park walk or a hike at the nature preserve most days.

With all the fatigue behind me and not yet feeling too huge, this is the best I've felt this pregnancy.

  • I am still doing my regular lifting splits 4 days a week and running 2 days a week with a 7th day of alternative cardio. I have the green light from my OB to rollerblade through 24 weeks and then call that activity quits. It breaks my heart because I know it'll mean I won't rollerblade again until next summer :(

I'm lifting about the same as I did PP, including legs (deadlifts, squats, lunges, etc.). That becomes much less comfortable in the third trimester, so I want to keep it up as long as it feels good. I love feeling strong, so this is a big mental plus for me, too!

My runs are still pretty good as long as I don't go when it's too hot and I don't get dehydrated. I've kept my splits under 8:30 which I wasn't able to do when I was pregnant with DD. It still feels good, so I'll keep doing it!

DH, DD, pup, and I go for walks in the evening ranging from 2-5 miles depending on the route. I love walking and I know it'll be a primary source of exercise in the third trimester!

  • I've been doing the 30-minute workout at Planet Fitness that is a combination of weight machines and cardio using a step workout. Aside from a couple days that I was just too tired to get through my workout, I've been doing fine with this and I'm actually starting to see my muscle tone improve in my legs.

@LiveNLove44 I got my Gabrialla maternity support belt and I love it! Thank you for the suggestion. It has really made a difference for my runs. I'm only running about 4mi 3-4 times a week now but I'm good with that. Also on the days that I don't run I'm usually at the gym on the recline bike or cybex and lifting weights (machines and free weights).
  • I walk my dog for about 30-45 minutes every morning. Today was a bit short because it was already above 80 at 7 am!

I bought two workout DVDs (pilates and yoga) and have only done the yoga twice. Oops. Can't seem to get motivated on that one for some reason, but at least the regular walking seems to be keeping me looking mostly the same other than my bulging belly :)

Oh and also, I'm now in charge of mowing the lawn after DH's shoulder surgery, does that count?
  • @dannie134, mowing the lawn totally counts! ...unless you're on a rider ;) When I was pregnant with DD, I INSISTED that DH did not mow the lawn. I never mowed the lawn until that summer, and when I realized it would be a nice way to stay active, I was all over it :)

  • @Bingj, that makes me so happy! I love helping others figure out ways to stay active and comfortable (as much as we can be!) while doing it! I haven't used mine yet, but I know it'll come in handy soon :)

  • @MamaOwl15, I'm excited to hear that you're using that gym membership you just got! It is not easy to start a new routine and find time to do it, but getting out there must feel so good! Way to go!

  • @LiveNLove44 thanks for the validation :> I worry a little bit about mower fumes, but we have a small push mower so it's definitely a good workout and I make sure to take water breaks. Glad to hear I'm not the only one out there!

Biking with two little ones sounds like a great workout! Do you like the Burley trailer? DH and I are in the market :)

@devonsd315, I remember going for a run when I was pregnant with DD and passing a woman who was not pregnant. I thought to myself, "Do you know how easy you have it?! You don't have a belly in the way!!" I was SO jealous of her non-pregnant run!!

Yes I'm pretty jealous of flat bellied women these days. Not that I don't love baby kicks and feeling (and seeing!) baby move, but I see pictures of myself pre-pregnancy and think how easy it was to exercise back then! Yesterday when I was doing planks my husband was like "soon you'll just be able to rest right on your belly" :)

@LiveNLove44, Yes, I love the Burley.  I had a single Burley when my son (now 11) was little and used it all the time.  Now I have the double Burley d'Lite for my 2 year old and 11 month old.  They think it's fun to ride in and momma gets an AMAZING workout.
