BPA Free verses regular bottles

Hey ladies,

I recently purchased the entire collection of Dr. Browns bottles from a garage sale. She told me that they weren't the BPA free kind. Because the set cost $4 I decided to get it as a back up in case our baby didn't take to the Playtex or Advent that we registered for, but I didn't want to risk using them at all if they could be dangerous for the baby. I've been doing research on BPA and can't find anything completely conclusive either way. Has anyone used non BPA free bottles before or are using them now? Or know where I can find solid research on the issue. Thanks!

Here's some fun reading for you for the evening:

This one suggests that BPA alternatives (namely,BPS) aren't necessarily any safer than BPA

Here's a huge list of studies and articles on BPA you can search through by year, or topic of you choose:

We personally didn't use BPA bottles, since they're nearly impossible to find nowadays anyway.  But when my baby was tiny and teething, I strongly limited her exposure to plastics in general.  Now she's 21 months and rarely chews on things, so I'm not as cautious.  I'm a conservator by trade and I've seen my fair share of disgusting deteriorating plastics in the lab, and--granted, the older they are the grosser they are--but I just don't trust that there hasn't been a harmful plasticizer added to some of her chewy softer toys.  That's my take on it, anyway.  You do what you feel is right.  Happy reading!

  • Can you still trade them in? I know at one point you could trade in all bpa bottles for new ones that are bpa free.
  • I use lifefactory bottles and i love them! They wash easy and i used the heck out if them for my first baby.
  • Thanks ladies. @Nukke I will have to read up on those tomorrow when I'm not as tired lol

@StaceyRamiro I don't know if I can trade them in since I got them at a garage sale but I could look into it.

We registered for Playtex and Advent, we plan on using those first and hopefully she takes to one of them. I've heard great things about Dr. Brown, but they're so expensive and I thought this may be a good solution until  found out that they weren't BPA Free. I guess I'll have to research and make the decision.
