Face down..anatomy scan

So I had my scan today and the tech was able to everything but take pictures of the baby's heart or profile because he was face down. I have to go back in next Monday to see if baby is face up and we can finish the scan. Any tips on helping him turn up ...is there anything that I could do? I've looked it up and things like drinking coffee or eating sweets but geez my baby isn't use to all that, but any suggestions? Has this happened to any of you?.....on a good note though baby looks amazinngg he's got all his toes, fingers we saw his brain everything looked good his spine was the tech said looks nice and strong ...lolzz I was so happy I got to have both my boys with me dh and ds !!!! I'm a happy mommma!!!

Re: Face down..anatomy scan

  • My doctor didn't get good pics either. She suggested apple juice, just to get him moving in general. Not as overwhelming as coffee or candy.
    Worth a shot!

  • Orange juice !! That's what I drank before my elective sex scan at 18w2d ! And he was moving like crazy. But then on my anatomy scan he was moving a lot too and all I drank was the 1 litre of water.
  • @amberrmaree I did the water about 1L too and nttn he was just kidding with his hands on his face at first! I'll c orange juice @cgummie and apple juice sounds good too! Dh says the baby just didn't want to be bothered and isn't a morning person just like him!

One of the twins was face down but the tech was able to get kind of an upside down profile shot.
  • @rue:D the tech said that his spine was creating a glare on his heart and couldn't get any good pictures she did say his heart beat sounded good though, so its not too much to worry about but she still needs the pictures. Also his facial profile, since he wanted to hide and he went as far as covering his face!

  • Same thing happened when I had my scan. I had to go back also for pics of certain parts of the heart she wouldn't move at all. I even drank an iced coffee before I went in to get her going and nope.. finally after some wiggling and bringing in another tech they managed to get what they needed. Lol my appointments were at the same time of the day and I think that's her nap time!

I ate a popsicle while in the waiting room (kept it on ice in the car) because I heard cold and sweet is good.
  • Drink orange juice with LOTS of ice. The cold and natural sugars should get baby moving. Is there a time of day that baby is more active? I went for my first scan in the morning and they couldn't get everything because she wouldn't move. Scheduled my follow up for the afternoon because I've noticed that she tends to be way more active latter in the day.
  • @oywiththepoodlesalready my baby tends to move most in the afternoon, or night. The issue is my u/s office is about a 40 min drive into long island soooo we need to a.schedule early because we have to pick up my son and stepdaughter from school by 2:00 and b.it has to be on a Monday because dh is off on Sundays and Mondays ! So that makes Monday mornings the only time! But I have hope that with the ice cold drink and @Louisl a popsicle sounds good too I might just do all mentioned above!!! Lolzzz just as a guarantee idk if the. Ice po would last with such a long drive but I will def have the ice cold sweet drink o.j or apple juice! I really hope he turns around!

  • Orange juice and a little bit of sugar. I drank a small bottle of orange juice and ate a jolly rancher before my scan and baby was moving around like crazy! Good luck!!

  • My scan was 90 minutes, and they turned me up on my head to get a new angle on the Anatomy scan. Literally tipped the bed head down, feet up so I was almost falling off the bed. LO was moving and grooving too much, for them to get all the measurements... :D

Mama to a wonderful DD - Sep 2015, Wife to my DH since 2011, 2 dogs, a cat, and hoping to add No. 2 in May/June 2018. Canadian.
5 - IUIs, 3 - IVF retrievals, 2- failed transfers (fresh, and frozen), PGS on second IVF resulted in 1 perfect emby, and DD.
3rd IVF w PGS resulted in 3! perfect embys. 1st transfer - Sep 2017 2 more on ice.
  • I had that problem (he slept though the whole thing no matter what we tried--standing on my head included) so try 2 I just went for the Starbucks Frappuccino  -- Ice/coffee/sugar about 45 minutes before I had the scan and drank slowly so I finished off about 20 minutes prior so that the sugar/caffeine could reach the baby.  It worked very well -- he flipped around and moved as needed.  It was the only caffeine that I've really had all pregnancy (I do eat sugar because I can't help it).  It didn't make we feel poorly --- a little jittery but ok.  I did some research ahead of time --- the mocha frappuccio only has 110 mg of caffeine/ a huge 61 g of sugar but it was once.
  • To get my baby to move she just bounced my belly with the instrument and that worked!

  • My little girl was face down the entire time as well, but the tech was able to get all the pics. He said the baby is constantly moving. Since that was possibly my last ultrasound, I am going to go somewhere else so they can get some good pics. All he was able to get was a scary looking face shot of her lol. I def want to see her again before I deliver. He said drinking ice cold water would get her moving.
