2nd Trimester

Everything Stinks!

Everything smells. I have a dog and she smells awful. I had to switch cars with my husband because my car makes me gag. I walked into a gas station and immediately had to turn around and walk out. I have read a lot about smell aversions but it always seems to have something to do with food. I haven't noticed any weird smells attached to food, just people, animals, objects, and places. It's honestly getting to the point where I don't even want to be at home. My husband and I have cleaned EVERYTHING with no change. We bought an air purifier and that did nothing. I'm 17 weeks and have heard this can end with the first trimester, but it definitely hasn't. Does anyone know of anything I can do to make it stop?

  • Try putting a dab of Vicks under your nose when you have to go somewhere or do something that might have you gagging because of the smell, which might be all the time if smells at home are bothering you. If Vicks isn't something that smells good to you, you can try and think of other ideas. For the house you could also try one of those things that sprays on a timer or a plug in, just make sure you pick a smell that you like. My husband bought clean linen smell because I usually like it, but while pregnant it made me gag so I had to pick a scent myself by smelling them all in the store. Hope it gets better!

  • Our cafeteria at worK smells so bad. Like a Starbucks. The Vicks idea is a good idea. Not sure how that'll make lunch taste but it's going to be better than that room smells.
  • Yep. I threw up taking the garbage out because it just smelled so awful; it really probably didn't smell any worse than usual but pregnancy made it horrendous. Some people smell awful, too, as does one of my cats. I haven't had any food odor aversions but smells in general are killing me.

I've put a strong air freshener in my car and always keep something scented on hand for when I need it. Even if it's just a handkerchief with a good perfume sprayed into it, it helps a lot.
  • Yep, taking the garbage out every week is a mission. Every step I take closer to the bin the sicker I feel. I get sick on the front lawn every time :(

I got sick yesterday because someone put their plate in the sink, ran water over it but hadn't completely washed all the food off. It made my food come up
  • I had this same thing when I was around that week . I thought my car stunk my clothes stunk my house stunk everything . It was winter time then so i couldn't open the windows and get fresh air for a while so i was miserable everywhere ! I stopped driving because im on bed rest but my car still smells to me . but now that its summer and I can open the windows my house doesn't smell to me anymore neither do my clothes . Fresh air really helped me . But i still smell everything . I think your sense of smell is just on a 100 now and wont go back to normal until after pregnancy is over .
  • Good luck. Nothing has worked for me everything still reaks !
