Fasting before 1 hr glucose test?

Hey ladies! My doctor says there's no need to fast before the 1 hour glucose test, just eat something healthy that's low sugar/low carb. But I did that when I was pregnant with my son and still just barely failed and had to do the 3 hour which I passed (so I kind of feel like I had to go through all of that for nothing). I really want to avoid the 3 hour test this time around, and many of my friends are saying it's actually better just to fast (less chance of a false positive). Doc says the same this time, that I don't need to fast just eat healthily beforehand. What have you guys heard about this?

Re: Fasting before 1 hr glucose test?

  • I just ate a single serving of plain oatmeal to keep from getting sick during my test. I did that about an hour before I went in and then had an hour to wait after the drink. I brought a snack to eat right after.

  • I wouldn't fast, you'll end up feeling or getting sick. At least eat some toast, oatmeal, or something!
  • My doctor has always told me to fast before the test so I don't really have a choice in the matter.
  • My doctor told me to fast as well.  So I made my apt really early in the morning so hopefully it's not too bad.
  • Eat something low carb. Maybe eggs and a piece of breakfast sausage, no bread or oatmeal or cereal.  Bring a snack for after.
  • I work in a lab and we recommend fasting for 2-3 hours prior to the 1 hr test to reduce chances of falsely elevated results. It lowers your chances of having to do the longer test.
  • Thanks everyone! I think I will fast for a couple of hours before this time just to be safe. Last time I had eggs with a few veggies and got the false positive.
  • My ob said to not eat or drink anything 2 hours before I take the 1 hour test. I'm sure she said this with my first 2 kids, but I don't remember.
  • My doc told me not to fast either but my appointment is early AM and I'm not a big eater in the morning anyway so I figure I'll end up fasting anyway lol.  I will be cranky without my coffee though!

  • Don't fast, sometimes your sugar will rise in the absence of food. Like you said, eat something low carb at least an hour before you go.

  • I was worried for this myself. My OB told me I need to fast from midnight the night before and then my appt is at 930a BUT they are the SLOWEST at this office. I've gone in for just the monthly visit and have waited 2 hrs to be seen. If I wasn't this far along, honestly, I'd switch doctors but what can ya do. But back to topic...i sometimes am so sick in the morning until I eat something and then I'll start to feel better. I'm so concerned with driving 40 mins to my appt all while feeling faint and then having to wait for the test to be done. But I don't want to have a false positive bc a girl in always at the dr with did and she had to do the 3 hr and was miserable.

If your doctor says not to fast, then don't. Just don't eat something high in sugar. Trying to trick the test by fasting isn't going to do you any favors.

Also, veggies and eggs wouldn't really elevate your sugar.
  • I had my blood work for the glucose test my first pregnancy around 8 am. So I didn't eat anything that morning, but I did get dizzy from the drink they give you, instant sugar rush.
  • My doctor told me to fast
