C-sections

What to bring with you to the hospital

If it isn't clear by the title, first time mom here, who will be having a c-section next month. I'm just wondering what is recommended to pack for the hospital. Other than the obvious change of clothes and something to occupy your mind, is there anything specific I should bring since it is a c-section? I was told to take a pillow to hug against my stomach when I cough or sneeze.

Re: What to bring with you to the hospital

  • In addition to the usual robes/clothes (loose with no bands that will hit near your c section line), toiletries, etc., I recommend an extra comfy blanket and definitely Chapstick as it is cold and dry during various parts of your recovery. Good luck to you momma!
  • No need to bring extra pillows (unless you're particular about yours). The hospital has plenty, and FTR, I never found that particularly helpful anyways since they gave me a bellyband. I'm a big fan of nice slippers (particularly LL Bean) instead of the socks the hospital gives you. Also, a nice, light robe (hot flashes post birth are no joke, I lived in my robe and comfy pants). You should shower before you leave, so your preferred shampoo/conditioner is always nice.

A large bath towel. it's more cozy and bigger than hospital ones.
  • I also love the olay daily facial wet wipes for wiping your face/neck in between showers. It helped me feel more like a person! I brought my own pillow bc the hospital ones are crunchy but that is just me.

I would def recommend asking for a surgical binder. It holds everything in and gives great support post surgery.

  • Flip flops and slippers were nice to have. The first day I just wore the hospital gown but after I showered the next day I wore my own pjs. Something very soft and with buttons down the front if you want to breastfeed. I was super glad to have face wipes bc I didn't feel like getting up the first night to wash my face.
  • Boppy or other pillow. I used the boppy to hold on my belly when I was getting up in addition to nursing. Also, I loved having a belly bandit this time. I felt like it held everything in place.

  • Nice loose dress for wearing home. I also brought a nursing nightgown. I didn't want anything that could possibly rub on my incision. And your toiletries. Other than that, the hospital provided me with just about everything I needed.

Chapstick or some type of lip balm. The combination of not being able to eat and drink stuff before surgery, the dry hospital air, and not really feeling like eating or drinking afterwards, my lips were SO dry.

I went in and came out wearing a maxi dress that didn't rub on my incision...best decision ever.
