Zoloft and Pregnancy

Hello all,
I am currently on Zoloft for anxiety and am curious if any other moms-to-be are as well; and whether you stayed on it or went off? I believe it's truly up to one's own discretion, as there is no research for or against it?... I am concerned that if I go off it, my mind will take a turn for the worse? Also, has anyone breastfed on it? Thank you!!

Re: Zoloft and Pregnancy

  • I'm not on it but I've read it's a bad idea to come off when your hormones are changing so much during pregnancy. If you don't get a good response here, I believe I read a thread like this in the Jan 2016 group so you could try searching there :)

  • I understand you have to titer down (you shouldn't stop cold turkey). You have to weigh the pros and cons with your doctor. Many people take a much smaller dose. I think it is a class c drug, so it is not recommended while breastfeeding (but some take it in a low dose). But don't quote me on that.

  • Unless, you're severely depressed - Id think about tapering off. You have to weigh what's more dangerous. If you are going to be a risk to yourself without it, then you'll probably want to stay on. You should really discuss with your doctor.

  • Do not take zoft while pregnant
  • I was on Zoloft for years....
  • I had just begun taking 25 mg Zoloft before finding out I was pregnant. I stopped, because I figured I could go another 9 months with the anxiety I've had my whole life if it means less risk for my pregnancy.

Zoloft is not as bad as other drugs for pregnancy and breastfeeding, as in- no correlation has been proven btw taking the drug and birth defects. Though, in my own research I found women saying their babies were born with heart defects and they blame the zoloft. But a certain percent of babies are born with those defects anyway so who's to say what caused it?

You have to weigh the pros and cons. If you will have a very stressful and anxious pregnancy without the drug, it may be best to stay on, because stress is not good for pregnancy...but you'll probably need to wean off at the end so baby doesn't go through withdrawal after birth. If you think you can do without it or even take it at a lower dosage, I would do that..but wean off gradually.

In short, talk to your doc and weigh your options. Good luck!

  • I was on zoloft during my first pregnancy. My dad had passed away when I was 7 months pregnant from cancer and it was too much handling both. My Dr just had me wean off at the end.
  • I was taking Zoloft for anxiety and weaned myself off and got adjusted before I got pregnant. It was very difficult and I don't think it would have been good if I had done it in the middle of changing hormones. I was really worried how I would function without it during pregnancy but things are going good. I am still a worrier as always but I haven't had any anxiety attacks at all. I read somewhere that because of hormone changes many women don't have the same problems with anxiety.
  • I've been on Zoloft for a few years due to anxiety. The day I found out I talked with my doctor about staying on it and she said that it was better to stay on it due to all of the changes your body is going through. I will probably stay on it during my whole pregnancy since I have been on it for 3 years already.
  • I developed severe prenatal depression during my pregnancy with my first child. It was very severe--I was nonfunctional by her time I sought treatment so I had no real choice but to start medication. My doctor put me on Zoloft because it was the best one for breastfeeding. We tapered off right before birth so that my baby wouldn't have withdrawal.

Talk to your doctor and if they agree, you could try tapering and see if your symptoms come back. If you start having problems just stop the taper.
