8 week old won't sleep during the day! Please help!

My baby girl just turned 8 weeks yesterday, she has been sleeping during the day fine (2-3 hours at a time) up until 4 days ago. She wakes up in the morning around 5:30-6:30 and from the moment she wakes up to the moment she goes to sleep at 9-10 pm she is fighting me to go to sleep, screaming crying and the only way to get her to sleep is bouncing and shushing. Unfortunately, once we get her to sleep she wakes up during her REM sleep (within 5-20 minutes) every time no matter where she's sleeping (including in my arms). This goes on constantly all day until her final fight around 9-10 pm when she sleeps until 1-3 am for only night feed. We feel so awful for her because she is showing all signs of tiredness (rubbing eyes, irritability and yawning) and she is only getting 6-8 hours of sleep a day tops. We are so worried about her well being having such short amount of sleep and crying so much that she gets sweaty and hot. We have tried stroller walks, car rides, pacifiers, you name it. We just don't know what to do at this point. Has anyone else experienced this? Do you have any suggestions? Please send them my way! Thank you soooo much!!!

  • That sounds awful. We've found that the 5 S's work great for us day or night: swaddle the CRAP outta her, lay her on her side in your arms, stick a binki in her mouth, swing her from side to side, and "shush" her or play a white noise machine. Swaddle, side, suck, swing, and shush. Courtesy of "The Happiest Baby On The Block". Good luck!

  • Have you tried a swing? When our little guy is flipping out, it's a great way to calm him.
  • YouTube the 5S's she's talking about. I haven't had to resort to it but have heard it works well. My baby is going through the same thing (also 8 weeks). The only thing that will work for him is being in my arms while I walk. So I just circle the house. He also likes being outside so I will just stand/walk around my deck and that seems to work. But it doesn't work very long I'm lucky to get fifteen minutes out of it.
Check out the wonder weeks app. It will tell you about the current developmental leap our babies are currently going through.
  • Do not want to dry out her skin with too many but how does she respond to a warm bath? My little guy sits there and can barely keep his eyes open when he gets his bath?! Worth a try at least! @narney405
  • I know everyone raves about the 5 s's but I used the baby whisperer on my girl starting at 8 weeks and she has a great routine going now! I follows the book to a t and it has been amazing! A real swaddle is important too I wasn't really swaddling but she now knows it means sleep time!
  • I second using a swing. The luv u 2 zoo swing by fisher price is my go to for when baby is tired but will not go to sleep in his crib or my arms during the day (he is almost 10 weeks now, the swing with music has been putting him to sleep during the day since he was 5 weeks). He sleeps a minimum of an hour up to two hours in the swing.

I completely agree. We did this to, it worked!

  • My son is also 8 weeks and I have noticed he will go a day or two without sleeping during the day and then a day or two of sleeping all day long. He only wakes to eat and have a diaper change. I hope your daughter will catch up on her sleep soon!

Definitely use the 5S's. Even if he won't sleep, it calms my son. He just stares into space for a little while. I hope something works for you soon!
  • Hopefully it's just a phase, and will pass soon. Good luck momma, eventually something you're doing will work! I agree with the 5Ss and try a carrier.
  • Have you tried baby wearing?? Whenever our girl is in the k'tan or the ergo it helps her sleep. :)
  • We were having a similar problem and my little girl still fights sleep but it's definitely getting better. We realized we were over feeding her. We had to switch to bottles with my breast milk due to several weeks of nipple pain and mastitis. The large bottles were causing her to have indigestion and tummy troubles that would wake her from her naps in 20 minutes. Now that I'm back to breastfeeding her and we went down on the size of the bottles she has been sleeping a ton better!
