Barky cough

Wondering if any other mamas may be dealing with this and have more of an answer than me. Earlier this week, our 2 month old got up in the middle of the night and had a sort of dry "barky" cough..he did it very few times and when he did it was just one cough. He has also recently had a slightly stuffy/runny nose (but not consistently). The cough was enough for me to take him to the doc. They checked him out and said the only thing that looked a bit off was swollen nasal tissue which could either be a little cold or allergies. The next night he was much better but then again tonight we have that sporadic yucky cough. Trying to do saline but avoiding humidifier on the chance of allergy issues. Anyone have similar experience? Hoping to better pinpoint what's going on and how to stop it!
