Thank you. We are familiar with MGL but unfortunately my husband cannot take 8 weeks. He is in medicine and the nature of his job is of paramount importance to his patients (who are going blind.) Hopefully one day we will have a healthy baby and he can take a couple weeks unpaid. The only way we would pursue the 8 weeks would be if G-d forbid, we had a very sick child.
@Bostonbaby1 I imagined you'd be aware as you usually have a great deal of knowledge about MA legislature etc, and your husband's occupation makes it difficult, I knew, from previous posts. But I wanted to make sure others in our state knew, as I had no idea fathers were given paternity leave until I was reading through my BFs employee handbook!
Tell us more about FMLA, those who know. I'm a private contractor, therefore no paid time off or sick days or anything like that. Should or could I look into something like FMLA?
To be eligible for FMLA, you have to be employed for at least 12 months with your employer, work at least 1250 hours in the 12 months preceding the leave, and the employer has to have at least 50 employees within a 75-mile radius. FMLA doesn't apply to independent contractors, unfortunately.

YES!!! Very important for all to know!!! Maybe you should posted on New England mamas to be? It is great knowledge for those that don't know it. Companies typically are not very forthcoming with this type of information.
I was curious so I read this thread.... Oh my goodness I'm so happy I live in Canada and I'm so sorry for everyone who only gets 6 weeks off!! As long as you work a certain amount of hours in the last year, In BC we get 50 weeks of maternity and parental leave paid at 60% by government. And if you need sickness leave you can take up to 65 I think? You can start up to 8 weeks prior to baby coming. And we don't even have to go back to work after, but if we want to our job must be held. I think everyone should move to Canada. just kidding.
I heard something about a new law in Massachusetts (and one other state...can't remember sorry) effective yesterday that requires employers to give paid sick time...anyone know anything about this?
