Anatomy Scan at 24 weeks

This is more for curiosity's sake than anything, but it seems like most of us are getting anatomy scans around 20 weeks. It is standard practice at my OB/GYN to wait until around 24 weeks for the anatomy scan. Does anyone else go to a practice that prefers to wait that long? Not complaining, just curious. :)

Re: Anatomy Scan at 24 weeks

  • I did that with my first. This time I'm doing the 20 weeks, I honestly prefer it later if at all. But due to upcoming scheduling conflicts I decided to just go ahead with the 20 week. My OB doesn't care either way though.

My doc said not before 20 but not after 24 weeks. I'll be getting mine at 22 weeks but that's largely due to my husband's work schedule. This is one appointment he does not want to miss :)
  • My office wanted 24 weeks as well
  • I got mine at 17 weeks but it took much longer because it was so early.
  • Mine will be at 22 weeks. My midwife didn't really have a preference but it was just how my monthly appt worked out.
  • Mine wouldn't do before 20 weeks, and then they ended up canceling my appointment. So I had mine at 21w 1d. And then babies legs were crossed the whole time. ;( everything else looked good though
  • I will be getting the a/s at 24 weeks also. My MFM Dr will be on vacation from my 20-22 weeks and I have to also have a echocardiogram ultrasound for this LO that will be preformed first and had to be done at 22 weeks. I see my OB and or MFM weekly now so the waiting is a bit easier but I still can't wait for the a/s to be reassured that all is healthy with this little girl.
  • Did your office say why they wait? I'm just curious as I've never heard waiting that long other than to be able to do the 3d which I've always viewed as fun but unnecessary.
  • My office sticks pretty closely to 18-22, but I can imagine that if they were really tightly booked, they'd go 24.

My caregiver said between 20 and 24 weeks, but not later.  Mine was done 23 weeks and 4 days.
  • @mrsdhouse89  I plan on asking my OB about it next week when I go in for a check up. :) Again, not complaining, just curious as to the reasoning behind it. And maybe a little anxious to see how my baby has grown. ;)

I'm a FTM, so it didn't seem odd to me until I noticed that a lot of us were getting scans at around 20 weeks. I've done a little research on my own and some doctors think they can get better readings if they wait until around 24 weeks.
  • I had mine at 20 weeks..  but actually have to go back next week when I will be 24 weeks. The baby wasn't in a great position so they couldn't get all the images they needed. Maybe it's better to wait? Plus it might be the last time you get to see baby before he/she is here!

  • Same thing happened to me today. Went for an anatomy scan and they couldn't get measurents or the baby's sex. The baby was not in a good position for measurements n had legs crossed. My Doc is sending me to an MFM. I just hope everything is ok!!
  • My Dr does between 19 and 20 weeks, but all of their a/s are outsourced to another hospital who is only in their building 3 days a week so sometimes appts can go out to 24 weeks. I luckily got in at 19 weeks and 4 days.
  • There is a blood test that you take between the 18th and the 20th week. Shortly after they do the anatomy scan. They usually wait for the results of the blood work That way if something comes up wrong then can look closer at the ultrasound As an example when I was pregnant with my son his test came back from a very high probability of down syndrome. During the ultrasound they look for the neck fold the short limbs etc and all the signs of having it and he didn't have any

I'm doing mine at 24 weeks too. My doc said he is fine with anything between 18-24 weeks. He mentioned that since the organs are larger at a later date that they are sometimes easier to see than doing it at an earlier time. It sounds like it's doctors preference, but as long as it's done within that few week timeline that it's just fine!
