February 2016 Moms

new here and strange question

YAY!  I'm having a baby!!!  I found out I was pregnant last Wednesday, went in for HCG test on Friday (714), and went in today for another (2,205). I am due February 9th. We are beyond excited, but waiting to tell family and friends until 2nd trimester.  I had a miscarriage in November, but had already told everyone I was pregnant.  It was so hard telling everyone the bad news.  Fingers crossed and lots of prayers for a healthy pregnancy!

Random question:  We are having a staff meeting tonight and my boss picked up subs for supper.  I read that deli meat is a no no when pregnant.  How do I avoid eating a sub without letting on I am pregnant?

I have eaten about 7 turkey sandwiches since I found out. And last time, turkey lunch meat was my jam.

Eat the lunch meat. There hasn't been a meat related listeria outbreak in 10+ years in the US from what I understand. I had severe food poisoning with DD1 TWICE. Both times, it was from washed vegetables.

  • So just asked my ob today about a bunch of the don't eat these.... She said until my 9/10wk appt the only thing to really worry about was Advil/alieve... So I'd (now) feel comfortable eating the sub as long as it was fresh (not sitting out for hours). I'd also guess there may be chicken salad or tuna or veggie options?

Congrats! I'm due the 9th too!

The day after I found out I was pregnant my MIL brought a spread of subs to my new house. I skipped the lunch meat and had tuna instead. I ate a couple lunch meat sandwiches during my last pregnancy though. I was totally fine but did feel a little guilty afterwards though.
  • If you have a microwave you could heat up the sandwich to help kill bacteria. Just say you prefer your cheese melted.

  • Eat a sub.  You'll be fine.

Generally, any food that is safely prepared is safe.  Just don't go to an oyster bar or anything.

  • If it were me, I would just heat it up. No biggie if there's a microwave.

  • Eat it. There are a shit ton of things that could cause you to get sick and hurt baby while pregnant... Make sure you eat things from vendors you trust. If you're worried, get it heated up to steaming.

  • Why don't you say you already ate or are on a diet and skip it. It's such a small thing that isn't worth the risk imo. The chances may be small but you'd feel really guilty if you risked the health of your baby for a salami sandwich. No one will put two and two together.

  • Congrats and welcome!! I'm just not a risk taker and would probably say I was full or heat it up at the very least.

  • Is there a toaster oven? I ate sandwiches near daily with both of my other children. But I also just love toasted/hot sandwiches, so it worked out.

Eat it if it sounds good and you feel comfortable. If not there are plenty of great suggestions above. Meat sounds repulsive to me, so I'd bring something else and say I'm on a diet.

I don't think there is anything wrong with having a sub. I might be a little leary if it had been sitting out for an extended period of time.

This. When I was pregnant with my son the big Listeria outbreak was lunch meat, more people got sick from melons and spinach that year. They never said don't eat that stuff so as long as it's not sitting in the hot sun for 5 hour I'd say go for it.
  • Eat what you want. Just don't drink alcohol or smoke lol
