Exercising with a previa

I have a marginal previa and have been put on "pelvic rest" until further notice. My 19 week US showed the previa initially and I was instructed no sex and no running/heavy lifting, etc. I continued to do light exercise like walking, the elliptical at the gym, prenatal yoga, and a prenatal fitness class 1-2x a week which has been one of my FAVORITE things about pregnancy. Something about working out with a bunch of other expectant moms is so much fun and I've made so many new friends. And obviously since it is a prenatal class the moves are safe for pregnancy and not too intense (think resistance bands and 3 lb weights).

At 27 weeks (Currently I'm 29wks) I had another US and my placenta still has not moved enough, so I am still on pelvic rest until I hear more at my next US at 32 weeks. This time, the NP told me the only exercise I should be doing is walking and "gentle" yoga, which is OK...but I miss getting more of a workout in my prenatal fitness class. On top of this, a week later at my glucose test/check-up I got a weight gain lecture! Ughhhh...I wanted to scream at her, "YOU told me I can't work out! And now you're saying I'm too fat?!" (For the record, I was 28 weeks at the time and have gained a total of 25 lbs.)

I honestly have no issue with the no sex thing since that is the last thing on my mind...I am however having trouble with the exercise restrictions since working out is one of the only things that make me feel good about myself these days. I froze my gym membership recently because I figure why waste the money when I can walk outside now that it is summer. (my prenatal yoga class is at a different location)

Anyone else dealing with this? What do you do for exercise?

I have a complete previa but THANKFULLY, exercise is one of the things I don't really care about - I have been walking, and just in general running around after my 2 kids but nothing more than that. Not like I was doing anything else in the first place. I'm also 29 weeks. Honestly, not like I'm an expert or anything, but I'd probably continue the prenatal class provided you haven't had any bleeding obviously. Especially if it's "just" a marginal previa.

  • @e1223 nope no bleeding and it is definitely just a marginal previa (for now). I think I will continue the class and maybe just cut it down to 1x a week...thanks for the advice! :)
  • I have marginal previa which was just upgraded to low lying placenta a week ago or so. I have been on pelvic rest pretty much this entire pregnancy. I do exercise most days, but not like I'd like to! I take the dog on some pretty fast, hilly walks (about 3.5 miles) or recumbent bike (about 9 miles) which my doctors are fine with. On lazier days, I have a prenatal Pilates downloaded on my iPad that I have really enjoyed. I hated this 'slower' form of exercise at first as I prefer jogging, but I've really become accustomed and have enjoyed the break from strenuous exercise. I've gained 23 lbs at 29 weeks and my doctor says I'm doing great.

I had a complete previa with no bleeding during my first pregnancy. My only restriction for workouts was no high impact activities. I continued doing all types of workouts until I felt the need to bring it down to just walking. GL!

I am 32 weeks and was put on pelvic rest at 18 weeks when I found out I had complete placenta previa. My doctor pulled me from work 4 weeks ago and I am on modified rest now. No sex, no lifting over 10lbs and no excessive exercise. I have had no bleeds, but if I do then I will be admitted to the hospital for the remainder of my pregnancy til my scheduled c-section at 38 weeks. I stopped going to prenatal yoga (I do light stretching at home), chase my 2 year old around and go for a walk a day. I'm not pushing it cause I rather be at home with my family then have a bleed and be admitted or have an uncontrollable bleed and have to have an emergency c-section. It is hard tho!!
