Moving on to an RE after two failed IUIs

I've been seeing my OBGYN during my infertility journey. After two failed IUIs I've decided to move on to an RE. What should I ask at this appointment? I've read a lot about gluten intolerances being linked to infertility so I want to look into that. I want to make the most out of this appointment, so any advice is welcomed. Thanks!

I'm sorry for your struggle and IUI response.

I'd go into your RE with an open mind about the idea that he or she will want to start from scratch though. It is very rare that an OBGYN has done a sufficient enough workup to satisfy an RE (though it is possible). While you *should* ask about gluten intolerance and IF, please don't take it the wrong way if your RE wants to look at a lot of other tests before he or she is willing to go there. Also, the questions matter a little on what your diagnosis was from your OB. You didn't mention if your failed IUIs were due to PCOS, DOR, tubal issues, egg quality, sperm issues, etc. That would inform some of what you'd ask your RE.

Most of the time on this board when people ask this question, they haven't done much fertility research yet. It sounds like you have. That gives you an advantage. So I'd consider asking if the RE has any idea what protocol they'd put you on based on the testing they've seen, if they think there are any holes in the testing you've undergone so far.

  • Thanks so much for your response. I've given my intro before so I forgot to add some of that info to this post. No diagnosis has been given...unexplained infertility. I've done lots of research, probably too much lol.

I also had 2 failed IUIs and then was recommended by my OBGYN to go to a fertility specialist and to strongly consider starting IVF. My OBGYN said to take control and i followed her advice. It depends how aggressive you want to go. I felt like it was right for me. Did you try clomid?

  • @ambdtb yes, both IUIs were done with clomid and a trigger shot. Just curious, do you have a diagnosis? So have you started IVF? I'd be open to it…just don't know how we would afford it.

@lilmissslp neither myself nor my DH are diagnosed with anything. So it's unexplained. I caulk it up to my age (38) and time we have been trying bc we have only been married 2 years. Luckily living in Massachusetts infertility is viewed as a disease and is covered by most insurance (to an extent). So the decision wasn't a financial one for us. I cannot imagine having the pressure of finances on top of this. We are so blessed in that. I never thought we would be doing this but it happened and I'm so glad we did it. Talk to the doctor and hopefully it will become clear which path you should take. It may be good to line up your thoughts on which direction you think is best for you and then ask for the doctors recommendation.

  • Thanks @ambdtb I really appreciate your advice. That is wonderful that it is not a financial burden for you. Best of luck in your journey!
