Two Under 2

Spacing for kids after 2u2

I'm on the fence about having more kids. My 2u2 are now 4 & 2.5 (20 months apart), & I love it. We're at a crossroad between stopping at 2 or having more.

I'd like to hear any insight into how far apart other kids were after having 2u2. Does anyone regret having more after 2u2? Does anyone regret not having more? Mostly though I'd love to hear how #3 (& beyond) affected the family dynamics.

2u2!

Re: Spacing for kids after 2u2

  • I had 2 under 1 and we didn't add #3 till #2 was 4.5. Now we have 4; 7, 6, 20 months and almost 5 months ... I loved having that span of years between #2 and #3. My older set were/are pretty self sufficient and #3 just tagged along everywhere we went (soccer/museums/ballet). I felt like I really got to enjoy her milestones, unlike the haze that was my experience w having the first two 11 months apart. #4 surprised us!

Best of luck w your family planning!
  • My first 2 are 17 months apart. #2 & 3 will
Be 26 months apart. #3 is still cooking so I don't know how the dynamic will be. We are planning on having 4 total. I do worry that #3 will be left out because 1&2 are so close.

  • My five kids are 5,4,3, and 20 month old twins with baby #6 on the way. My first two are 13 months apart. #3 is 18 months younger, and the twins are 16 months younger. This will be our largest spacing of 21.5 months. Going from 2-3 was the easiest transition. 1 & 2 had someone to play with. Going from 3-5 was a piece of cake too. I think anything over 3 children is pretty easy and I can say that while still being in the trenches :)
  • @Belley2004 I hope you are right about going from 2-3 being easy!!!! 1-2 was ROUGH.

  • For me going to 3 has been rough. The gap between #1 and #2 is 20 months and btw #2 and #3 is 22 months - they are 3.5, 2 and 3 months. My challenge is that my 2 yo is an absolute handful and my 3.5 yo is also testing boundaries, and torments his younger sister. The baby is a piece of cake (thankfully!!!). I'm hoping this is just a phase and passes soon! We're a bit overwhelmed to say the least!

  • Hi I'm pregnant with baby #4. My first two are 2years and 3 weeks apart. My second and third are 19 months apart. My fourth will be born when my third is barely 3 years old. Honestly I love the gaps. I just wished I planned my fourth closer to my third. But personally they are easy and nicely age gapped. Not too close nor far apart.

My first 2 are 14 months apart, both girls and best friends. Boys followed at 19months and then 21months after that. Having 3 little ones was the hardest for us, but adding #4 (though I had 4 aged 4 and under) was "easy".

3 years later we had a girl. 4 years after that, another boy and #7 will be 26months younger than him. I actually think having them closer together (18-24months) is easier because they can play together. My 5th child who has big gaps on either side is our biggest challenge since she's either bothering the bigger kids or her little brother is bothering her.

ETA: I do NOT regret having lots of kids (though it is hard), but plenty of older moms have told me they wish they would or could have had more. I am amazed at how many people are just not able to have (more) kids, though they want them!
