Heart Palpitations

hey mamas-
So I know that with the increase in our blood volume during pregnancy and the fact that our hearts are working harder because of this, that it's normal to experience some heart fluttering/ palpitations during pregnancy, however I'm getting to the point where it's really bothering me.
I'm 18+4 and for the past almost 2 weeks, I am constantly feeling my heart flutter, 100% of the time. There are no breaks. It's kinda freaking me out that it's not something I'm just occasionally feeling, but that it's literally all of the time.
Anybody have any insight? I'm trying not to google.
Thanks!

  • I'd call your OB. A sign of anemia is heart palputations.
  • During week 7-8 I was having heart palpitations and my OB said it was normal because of the increased blood volume. It went away HOWEVER this past week I hit my 14 week mark and started having them again on Thursday and Friday except this time was very uncomfortable. I suffered from severe anxiety a few years ago so I am familiar with the heart flutters, etc. but it is still scary. I've been trying to make sure I'm getting enough water/fluids in daily.
  • I've been having some chest tightness, 15 weeks today. My OB has me going to get an EKG and an echo (ultrasound of the heart). Definitely call your OB, were not doctors and it would be horrible if something happened to you or baby.
  • Hey, I am sure that things are all fine!..I have suffered from heart flutters as well, but mine were due to the fact that I have thyroid problems (pre-pregnancy diagnosed) and heart palpitations, clammy hands, shakey feelings are all common signs of having an overactive thyroid...although I am sure symptoms are different for everyone, but I would call OB just incase!. It might just be one of those other annoying pregnancy symptoms!. Good luck though :) x

I have heart palpitations as well. Midwife said not to be surprised if they increased through pregnancy and to make sure drinking plenty of water (like a gallon a day). I would definitely talk to your doctor to be safe.
  • Heart palpitations are normal during pregnancy, but as often as you are having them I would discuss with your OB about seeing a cardiologist and getting an echo and EKG and a couple other tests. I found out with my last pregnancy that I do in fact have a leaky valve, and it's more noticeable with pregnancy because of increased blood volume which can increase existing symptoms. Thankfully my leak is in the valve that isn't a major concern, but they want me to get it checked out every so many years. I suggest you do go to a cardiologist just to get a good look and make sure it's nothing serious.
  • I had heart palpitations with my last pregnancy. My doctors ran tests and diagnosed me with a heart arrhythmia. My heart could not keep up with the extra blood from pregnancy. I felt horrible! I was very light headed and fainted frequently. I got better around 28 weeks. This pregnancy is better, but I still get shortness of breath and a racing heart. Good luck I know it can be a frustrating condition.
